Abbey Weitzeil MIA in Pac-12 100 Free Prelims

2017 WOMEN’S PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil was slated to swim the 100 free on day 4 prelims at the 2017 Pac-12 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, but she was missing in action when her heat stepped up to the blocks this morning. The Cal freshman was one of the medal favorites in tonight’s final.

At the end of the 200 free on Friday, Weitzeil showed fatigue at the end of the race, splitting 29.00 over her last 50 yards – slower than anybody else in any of the 3 finals. After exiting the pool, she laid down on deck and had to be assisted away from the blocks.

Update: A spokesperson for the Cal women’s swimming team tells SwimSwam on Saturday that Weitzeil is “not feeling well” and won’t be available to compete in the 400 free relay on Saturday evening “to allow her to rest and recover in order to be ready to swim at the NCAA Championships.” No specific information about what ails Weitzeil was available.

Weitzeil, the 50 free American Record holder, was on the short list of swimmers who could contend with Stanford’s Simone Manuel, the 100 free American Record holder, in tonight’s final. Despite Weitzeil’s absence, the Bears will still have 2 swimmers in the final. Farida Osman qualified 6th this morning, while teammate Kristen Vredeveld made it back with an 8th place finish.

So far at this meet, Weitzeil has earned a bronze medal in the 50 free and an 8th place finish in the 200 free. She also earned a trio of silver medals as a part of Cal’s 200 medley relay, 800 free relay, and 200 free relay.

Heart Murmur. You’ll see. But she will be fine.

“However, the most common symptoms experienced by athletes with significant valve disorders include shortness of breath or chest pain with activity and a decrease in exercise capacity. Others can experience lightheadedness and fainting episodes.” ~ https://health.clevelandclinic.org/2015/01/sports-beat-is-your-heart-murmur-serious-video/

Some of the postings here that build on Abbey Weitzel’s 100 free scratch to point out that a number of excellent swimmers went to Cal and did not end up making the Olympics bring to mind HL Mencken, Donald Rumsfeld, and the streetlamp effect.

Mencken: For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple — and wrong.
Rumfeld: There are known knowns, know unknowns, and unknown unknowns.
Streetlamp: Drunk guy looks for his keys under the streetlamp not because that is necessarily where the keys were lost, but rather because that’s where he can see.

In other words, there is an abundance of reasons that swimmers’ trajectories flatten out, and we tend to pick out… Read more »

Last time I checked Terri was in ASCA Hall of Fame, what was the last Hall you were in beside the one in your mothers house?

Weitzeil was 21.1 last year unshaved in the 50 free in March. Still the fastest ever, granted she was training with a different coach. She wont lose much in the 50 as she hasnt rested or shaved for a 50 yard free in 2 years (similar to what KL in terms of yards prep). Im not so sure about Weitzeil’s her other events however as she has not looked particularly impressive this year.
Farida, Simone, Olivia, Lia,and Ohio st sprinter (Im sure im missing a few more) are in the mix for 50 title.

Cal has won 4 national titles since 2009. Stanford hasn’t won since 1998. Stanford gets gifted two Olympic gold medalists and Teri sucks and Meehan is the GOAT. Some posters on this forum are such a joke.

CONFIRMED: I ran into Weitzeil on her way out of the pool and tried to ask her what happened. When I asked her she stated that she did in fact go unconscious and all she said was she was out for a medical scratch.

Not that I agree with the Teri issue, but I’m glad the moderators allow reasonable arguing, a lot of sites censor far too much. I don’t know about the other swimmers, but training location seemed to have changed missy. Colorado gave her the free altitude training everyday, Cali took that away. Superman syndrome, as his home planet has higher gravity, on earth he’s faster than everyone else. Who’s to say that power won’t leave him one day
