Abbey Weitzeil Gets National High School Record for Second Time on Relay Leadoff

In 2014, swimming in the finals of the CIF-Southern Section Championships, Saugus High School’s Abbey Weitzeil broke the National High School Record in the 100 yard free both in her individual swim and then again leading off her team’s 400 free relay.

She’s pulled off that feat again in prelims on Thursday at the 2015 Division I Championship meet, finishing by leading off her team’s 400 free relay in 47.42.

That cleared her freshly-clocked 47.53 done in the individual event two hours earlier, and gives her three National High School Record-breaking swims in the same session (pending verification).

The record coming into the day was a 47.82, and along with a 47.91, Weitzeil has the four fastest swims ever done in high school competition (though she’s still short of her own personal best of 46.29).

Comparative splits:

  • Weitzeil Old HS Record:22.95/24.96 = 47.91
  • Weitzeil Individual HS Record: 23.09/24.44 = 47.53
  • Weitzeil New HS Record: 22.89/24.53
  • Weitzeil Personal Best: 22.29/24.00 = 46.29

Weitzeil’s front-end 50 split didn’t change much in the last year in this event, but she’s become a much better closer in that time. Expect both halves to be faster in finals, if her time from Winter Juniors in December is any indicator.
