Abbey Weitzeil of Canyons Aquatic Club swam a 25.00 50 free in time trials at the 2014 Speedo Junior National Championships to tie Kara Lynn Joyce‘s 2004 national age group record for 17-18 girls.

Previously, Weitzeil’s fastest 50 free came from 2013 Juniors when she won the championship final with 25.27, narrowly missing Missy Franklin‘s meet record of 25.23. The fastest she has been in 2014 is 25.37 from TYR Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions at Mission Viejo in June.

The all-time top ten 17-18 girls’ times are:

1. 25.00 Abbey Weitzeil 2014 CA CANY
1. 25.00 Kara Lynn Joyce 2004 MI CW
3. 25.10 Faith Johnson 2013 NC MAC
4. 25.27 Simone Manuel 2014 GU FCST
5. 25.29 Christina Swindle 2002 FG MS
5. 25.29 Sam Woodward 2009 PC STAN
7. 25.37 Maddy Schaefer 2010 PC PASA
8. 25.39 Olivia Smoliga 2012 IL GTAC
9. 25.40 Lia Neal 2013 MR AGUA
10. 25.45 so Betsy Webb 2009 IL WILD

Weitzeil is not entered in the 50 free at Juniors so we won’t see her break the meet record on Sunday. She is, however, swimming this event next week at Nationals. Her 25.27 seed time places her in the 11th spot going into the meet; a 25.00 bumps her up to fifth.

This was a great warm-up race for Weitzeil as she gets ready for the big stage next week, where she will be competing to make one of the US National teams. Look for her to break 25 when she’s fully tapered.

The recognition of Coley Stickels needs to be elicited. Time after time, club after club, Coley has produced fast swimmers in a consistent manner. His cerebral and passionate approach to coaching should be emulated and applauded. Consideration for Developmental Coach of the Year, at the very least, is an obvious choice and well overdue.

Does he ask you to review and rate his video productions too?

Coley produces fast swimmers! Who else gets a 12 year old qualified for Olympic Trials?

According to the fina rankings that puts her 19th in the world and 3rd for the US in 2014. Not bad for a warm up time trial, presumably as part of a practice session?

Great warm-up for Miss Weitzeil.
She must be full of confidence before Nationals next week.
It’s crazy to think that the girls’ 17/18 50 free NAG record is still only 25.00 in 2014.
Simone Manuel and Abbey Weizeil will put it at a level worthy of the best swimming country in the world.

Do other countries besides AUS have faster records for that age group?

Haha! I’m in France! I’m not in Irvine in the stands behind a camera! 😆
Ask her coach or her family to post the video if they have filmed the race.
Once and for all, I’m not in charge of finding all the race videos from all the meets in the entire world! 😆
There are competent people at swimswam for that.
Having said that, I’m like you. I’m waiting for the video with much interest. 😎
