Abbey Sorensen Gives Verbal Commitment To Boise State

Abbey Sorensen, a senior at Riverton High School in Riverton, Utah, has verbally committed to swim for Boise State University. She will join the Broncos next fall for the 2015-2016 season. “I picked Boise because it was a place that felt like home. Somewhere I knew I could fit in and be loved by the girls and the coaches there. It’s a great school and I’m beyond excited to be a Bronco,” said Sorensen.

Sorensen swims for Wasatch Front Fish Market, specializing in sprint freestyle and backstroke events. As a junior, she won the 50 Free and the 100 Back at the 2014 Utah 5A State High School Championships. She also qualified for Winter Junior Nationals in 50 Free at that meet. This summer, she placed 13th in the 50 Free and 26th in the 200 Back at the 2014 Western Zone Senior Championships.

Sorensen’s Best Times

(SCY)

50 Free: 23.49

100 Free: 52.37

200 Free: 1:55.36

50 Back: 26.93

100 Back: 56.97

200 Back: 2:04.90

Her Progression

Sorensen has had her best season yet, as a junior. Of all the times listed above, the only one that was not achieved in her junior season was the 50 Back. Her junior season was successful across the board, as she has dropped about half a second in the 50 Free, a second in the 100 Free, three seconds in the 200 Free, nearly two seconds in the 100 Back, and two seconds in the 200 Back.

If Sorensen can continue her trend of improvement, she may be able to contribute to the Bronco’s 200, 400, and 800 Free Relay in a couple of years, as well as the 200 and 400 Medley Relay. Sorensen would currently qualify for the C Final in the 50 Free, 100 Back, and 200 Back, at the Mountain West Conference Championships. As of now, she would not score any points for the Broncos, who won the conference title this year. Speculation aside, Sorensen still has another year to develop and get her times to the scoring level.
