5 sessions, 5 suits. Do you switch suits to suit your session?

We ask this question after seeing the new swimsuit collection from Aussie brands Funky Trunks and Funkita. It’s prints, prints and more prints which got us thinking, are you the pool chameleon who matches suits to your session or do you just stick to the old faithful and have a good heater on hand to dry them in time? To all the suit switchers out there, here’s our tip on the best look for your sessions.

  1. Endurance

It’s your coach’s favorite – a Monday morning distance set. They claim it’s the best way to get a swimmer’s body going again after the weekend but it’s really just so they can recover from their own weekend without having to talk to you. As you swim 400 after 400 after 400 all you can think about is how far away next weekend is and the conversation you have to finish at the end of the lane in the 10 seconds before you’re off again. To ease the mild depression you’re going to feel when the dreaded alarm destroys your sleep on Monday morning, be sure to have your favorite, most comfortable suit ready on Sunday night to get you going.

  1.  Sprints

It’s the session to get up and go fast in and as long as it’s not too late in the week, you should be feeling pretty good about it! You’ll be up and out of the water a fair bit so you need a suit that feels fast and looks good. Consider a suit that gives you plenty to talk about when you’re recovering on pool deck because as the distance swimmers say, that’s all sprint sets are good for anyway!

  1. Lactate

It’s the most important session of the week and it’s going to hurt. It makes you nervous just thinking about the pain! The first few max efforts make your muscles scream but once you’re half way through, you’re in the zone and you know you’re going to make it. You just want a suit that’s going to perform, you don’t care about what it looks like because you don’t care what you look like when you’re climbing out of the pool to dive start on the last effort. You just want to smash it out and swim down on a high knowing you’ve got nothing left in the tank.

  1.  Recovery

With that killer heart rate set out the way and you’re through hump day, the recovery session is like gym class at school! Even coach is a bit more relaxed and is unlikely to give the slackers a spray. It’s a party and your pull buoy and paddles are invited (just no band) so wear a suit that shows you’re in the mood for a fun session!

  1. Saturday session

It’s like a weekly prom night (on a Saturday morning with no make-up and bed hair). You’ve put in a massive week and it’s time to fire up for a big finish. The session’s going to be hard – why would coach give you anything less when they won’t see you for 36 hours? But you don’t care because after this it’s pancakes, massage, sleep and box-set TV all weekend. Pull out your number one suit and show why you love the weekly cycle that is the crazy life of a swimmer.

If you like to mix it up, then which suit do you choose for which session? Have you got your sprints suit or your special Saturday morning suit?
