While the USMS record book was getting re-written last weekend in Santa Clara, Fritz Bedford was busy writing his own code on the East Coast. At the 4th Annual UVAC Spring-in-Vermont Masters Mini Meet, the 50-year-old Bedford took down the USMS national record in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 24.57. This eclipsed the previous record of 24.75 set in 2011 by Steve Wood.
The men’s 50 backstroke was Fritz’s third event of the morning at this fast-paced mini meet. In the space of about 90 minutes, Bedford posted a 53.23 for the 100-yard backstroke and a 23.69 for the 50-yard butterfly, followed by his record-breaking time in the 50 backstroke. Fritz adds this swim to his recent world-records in the 50- and 100-scm backstroke (men’s 50-54 age group).
