2014 British Gas National Championships Finals Recap-Carlin Finishes Strong on Final Day

The 2014 British National Championships wrapped up Tuesday night in Glasgow and while there weren’t that many finals, there was fast swimming nonetheless.

Women’s 400 Freestyle – FINALS

Jazmin Carlin was back to her winning ways Tuesday night, claiming gold in the 400 free in a 4:04.68.  That’s right off her time from World Championships last summer and is a great boost of confidence for her going into the summer.  The rest of the field fell behind with Aimee Willmott finishing second in 4:08.98 and Eleanor Faulkner grabbing the bronze in 4:09.69.

Men’s 50 Freestyle – FINALS

Adam Brown tied for the fastest man in Britain this year with a 22.27, good enough for a national title. Benjamin Proud was just out touched (who’s already been 22.27 this year), finishing second in 22.31. Richard Schafers got the last spot on the podium, swimming to third in a 22.65.

Women’s 50 Backstroke – FINALS

Lauren Quigley broke the English Record and was able to remain in the top spot after last night semis, winning the national title in the 50 back in a 27.90. Her time was .02 faster than Gemma Spofforth’s previous English Record time of 27.92 from 2009. Georgia Davies was able to grab second in 27.99, just slightly ahead of teammate Francesca Halsall.  Halsall, who has swam 14 times this week, finished third in a time of 28.04.

Men’s 200 IM – FINALS

Only one swimmer was able to break the two minute barrier in the men’s individual medley Tuesday night.  Roberto Pavoni had himself quite a swim, dropping three seconds from his previous season best, winning in a time of 1:59.08. That’s good enough for the top time in Great Britain this year.  Joseph Roebuck claimed the silver medal with a 2:00.31 while Lewis Coleman was right behind him for third in a time of 2:00.50.

Men’s 1500 Freestyle – FINALS

Daniel Fogg ran away with the final race of the meet, swimming a season best in the 1500 and beating his time from World Championships last summer.  Fogg claimed the gold medal in a 14:59.86, a whole 13 seconds ahead of the field.  Jay Lelliott was able to get the silver with a 15:12.70 while Jack Burnell filled out the podium for third with a 15:14.64.

The long course season keeps rolling for Great Britain as they host an International meet at the 2012 Olympic pool in London this summer.  The Commonwealth Games will commence July 24th and go through August 2nd.  And finally the long course season wraps up with the European Championships set to be held in Berlin, August 13th-24th.
