National 800 free record for Gabriele Detti at Italian Nationals Day 1

2012 Italian Olympian Gabriele Detti put his name on the national record books on the first day of Italian Nationals, going 7:42.74 to win the 800 free and set a new Italian record.

Detti took over a second off of Federico Colbertaldo‘s 2009 mark of 7:43.84, and a second swimmer, Gregorio Paltrinieri, also got under the record.

Colbertado’s was also the old European Record as well, so Detti will get that mark as well.

Detti also takes over the top spot in the world rankings by over ten seconds, topping Australian Junior World Record holder Mack Horton. The previous top 5:

Other notable swims from the first day of competition:

Christopher Ciccarese went 53.94 to win the 100 back, touching out Niccolo Bonacchi by just .04. Both men now rank just inside the world top 10 on the year.

The women’s 100 back event went to Anna Barbieri. She went 1:00.42 to just sneak into the 2014 top 10 as well.

Mattia Pesce went 27.38 to win the men’s 50 breast, coming within two tenths of Fabio Scozzoli‘s national record.

While the men swam that 800 free where Detti dominated, the women competed in the 400 free, with national record-holder Federica Pellegrini easily topping the field. Her 4:04.56 is still five seconds off her Italian record, but won the race by four seconds and sits tied for the 2nd-fastest time in the world this year.

And an unrested Katie Ledecky still has the best time of the year in the 400 free! 😆

Congrats to Detti, Paltrinieri and to Pellegrini, who at her age is still capable of swimming middle distance events at these levels. Shame to Raisport which is the official broadcaster for the event and did not even bother to post a video of the entire M 800 free race (or a working video of the W 400 free for that matters).

Now it’s up to Paltrinieri to crush the European 1500 free record, after his 50:56 5km. Sub 14:40 shouldn’t be a problem for him right now.

I totally agree. He should be swimming way under 14:40

Detti’s time is also the European record. Colbertado’s suited 7:43.7 from 2009 was the former Euro mark, so Detti broke it by over a second, and Paltrinieri was under it too.
