MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Georgia swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem was chosen as the recipient of the Elite 89 Award during the NCAA Championships on Saturday at the University Aquatic Center.
The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.
“Chantal really epitomizes the ‘student’ part of student-athlete,” Senior Associate Head Coach Harvey Humphries said. “She’s not afraid of hard work, either in the classroom or in the pool. We’re really proud of her for this recognition. She certainly is deserving of it.”
Van Landeghem, a sophomore from Canada, boasts a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in Psychology. She has been named Presidential Scholar and has been chosen for the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team and the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Van Landeghem participated in the 50 and 100 freestyle and on the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays this week at the NCAAs.
Georgia’s Wendy Trott won the Elite 89 Award at the 2012 NCAAs.
Congratulations, Chantal, I am proud to say that we helped her and her family with the college recruiting process. We helped Brooklyn Snodgrass too. Way to go Brook.
Both of these girls represent the “student” in student athlete.
Way to go Chantal! It is tough enough to maintain a 4.0 in any college, and when you add up the number of hours you spend in the pool and in the weight room, this is truly a colossal achievement.
A 4.0 at Georgia…. Really? can we please give proper recognition to the swimmers at schools like CAL, stanford, Virginia, any of the Ivy Leagues. A 3.5 and higher at any of those schools is way more impressive. (this isn’t a jab at swim swam…more at the award)

But were there any swimmers from CAL, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford with GPA 3.5 who were in a final?
