Open Water Swimming in South American Championships

The South American open water swimming team has certainly shown a lot of strength leading up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.  South American swimmers, led by the Brazilians have been a strong force  throughout the world circuit and  today at at the South American Championship  in Valparaiso Chile the 10K was contested.  Brazil’s Allan do Carmo took the men’s 10K in a time of 1:56.43, two seconds in front of Diego Vera of Venezuela 1:56.45 – Ecuador’s Santiago Enderica was third in the race 1:56.50.

In the women’s event it was Kristel Kobrich of Chile capitalizing on the home course advantage with a dominating win.  Kobrich finished the race in 1:58.06, well ahead of Cecilia Biagioli of Argentina (1:59.35) and Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil (2:00.15).

Tomorrow the open water team event will take place with the Brazilians a strong favorites.

The South American Games are a multi sport championship event hosted this year in Santiago Chile.  The Brazilians are currently atop the medal count with a today of 218 medals.  Just as in the Olympics their will be a Para South American Championships later in the month which will include pool events.
