Day 1 recap:
In Zone C, Indiana has earned their first male diving qualifier of the year after Darian Schmidt won the men’s 3-meter event, as the Hoosiers try and match their four-invites-to-NCAA’s from last year. So far they’ve got a lot of work to do in that regard, and their other divers will likely need higher places in latter events to earn their invites (though Emad Abdelatif’s 6th-place finish may sneak in).
In the women’s 1-meter, defending NCAA 3 meter champion didn’t wait for her primary event to seal up her spot at NCAA’s. Purdue’s Casey Matthews put up a big score of 616.20 to win the women’s 1-meter. The two behind her who also sealed up their spots are both from mid-major programs in Illinois: Illinois State’s Wenting Zhang and Southern Illinois’ Sherry (Kaixuan) Zhang. Kentucky junior Christa Cabot, who qualified for NCAA’s last year though she didn’t score, won’t technically earn her bid until tomorrow, but if she were to fail to qualify with her 4th-place performance, it would be a massive upset.
In Zone E, USC’s Haley Ishimatsu, another defending NCAA Champion, didn’t wait for her specialty to qualify for NCAA’s. She won the 1 meter, which could be big for the Trojans if she continues to perform well on the springboards. Last year in Indy, she won the national championship and broke the championship record on the platform, but didn’t score in either springboard event.
Meanwhile, the first diving qualifier for the Stanford women is a bit of a surprise. That honor goes to Alex Clay after she placed 2nd on the 1 meter – her best event. That’s big for the Cardinal to get her in early, as Stephanie Phipps and Kassidy Cook both have great shots later in this meet. Both Cook and Phipps are primarily springboard divers though, so they’ll have to perform on the 3 meter or count on a lot of doubles to earn their invites. Placing in the top 5 on the 3-meter should be enough to earn an NCAA invite, though for now only the top 3 are guaranteed.
Meanwhile, the Stanford men have already got two qualifiers in, with Kristian Ipsen and Bradley Christensen going 1-2 on the men’s 3-meter. Hawaii’s strong diving history lives on another year, as Amund Gismervik stamped his ticket as well.
