DeSelm’s Tar Heels Send 13 Swimmers to NCAA Championships

The University of North Carolina women’s swimming team, fresh off an outstanding second-place performance at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, has earned invitations for 13 individuals to compete at the 2014 NCAA Championships to be held at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis, Minn., March 20-22.

Ten Tar Heel swimmers earned invites for individual swims and another three qualified as alternates for invited relays.  Carolina is eligible to swim four of the five relays at the NCAA Championships.  UNC’s eligible relays are the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.81), the 200-yard medley relay (1:37.87), the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:02.54) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:14.39).

Carolina’s invited individuals are as follows. These are the events they were specifically invited in.  They may also swim other events at the meet in which they have achieved provisional times.

Cari Blalock, Senior – 200-yard individual medley (1:57.79), 400-yard individual medley (4:08.96), 200-yard butterfly (1:55.42)

Lauren Earp, Sophomore – 100-yard freestyle (48.67)

Annie Harrison, Sophomore – 400-yard individual medley (4:11.81), 200-yard backstroke (1:54.44)

Meredith Hoover, Senior – 200-yard butterfly (1:55.01)

Sarah Koucheki, Freshman – 200-yard butterfly (1:56.26)

Hannah Lincoln, Sophomore – 50-yard freestyle (22.17)

Emma Nunn, Sophomore – 500-yard freestyle (4:42.79), 400-yard individual medley (4:10.86), 200-yard butterfly (1:56.47)

Stephanie Peacock, Senior –500-yard freestyle (4:36.40), 200-yard freestyle (1:45.48), 1650-yard freestyle (15:49.11)

Danielle Siverling, Junior – 500-yard freestyle (4:40.29), 200-yard freestyle (1:44.43)

Carly Smith, Senior – 100-yard backstroke (53.06)

Tar Heels who will be making the trip as alternates for relays will include sophomore Ally Hardesty, freshman Sarah Hitchens and senior Katie Rechsteiner.

One other Tar Heel, freshman Abby Fisher, is currently the second alternate for meet selection as an individual.  She has a season best time of 2:11.22 in the 200-yard breaststroke.  Her ability to move from alternate status into the meet itself would be determined as a later date as the Championships near.

A total of 281 swimmers will represent 70 schools at this year’s NCAA Championships.
