After night one, UC-Santa Barbara have the early lead for the women, up 80 to 68 from UC-Davis. Brigham Young University is up four points, 56 to 52, to University of the Pacific. Hawaii is in third at 32 points, due to an unfortunate disqualification last night.
Women’s 500 Free – FINALS
UCSB star senior Andrew Ward began the meet’s individual events with a 4:$6.99 win in the women’s 500 yard freestyle, which clears the NCAA’s provisional qualifying time. She went out hard in this race (splitting 51.9 in the first 200 yards), which made the difference between her and teammate Heren Alanis (4:48.81) for the title. UCSD’s Lexy Troup took 3rd in 4:49.19.
Men’s 500 Free – FINALS
Hawaii set the tone for day two, with a MSPF meet and Pool Record by Vic Goicoechea of 4:16.67. That time is well under the B standard, and a bit off the 4:15.29 ‘A’ standard.
Goicoechea’s teammates Edua Guimaraes and Kacy Johnson finished 304 at 4:27.09 and 4:27.86.
Pacific rounded out places five, sixth with Brand Chandler and Bran Presswood.
The next best finisher was Stott Bushnell of BYU, who was over ten seconds behind at 4:27.09.
Women’s 200 IM – FINALS
UCSB went 1-2-4-6 with Sopia Yamauchi, Allison Knight, Katie Records and Anne Peanasky. Yamauchi had the win at 2:00.23; her next two teammates were at 2:01’s and Peanasky at 2:02.
Katie Edwards of UC Davis was second, 2:01.04. Her teammate Sabrina Cochrane was seventh, 2:03.28.
Rounding out the top eight was Crist Mardones from Pacific at fifth, 2:02.28, and Kristen Clarno of Loyola Marymount at eigth, 2:04.29.
Men’s 200 IM – FINALS
BYU scored big with a 1-2-3 sweep, plus a fifth place finish in the 200 IM finals. Jake Taylor led the contingent, finishing in a time of 1:44.96. The time was a new MPSF Record, which was his from prelims.
His teammate Rafa Alfaro was second, also under Taylor’s record from the morning, at 1:45.48. Hayden Palmer was third, 1:48.55, and Andrew Rutherfurd at fifth, 1:49.99.
Pacific and Hawaii split the other spots, with Oliver Simkovic at 1:48.77 and Sam Bryant at 1:50.80.
Hawaii picked up points with four in the B final, but ended up only scoring three due to another DQ for the Warriors.
Women’s 50 Free – FINALS
The Hawaiian women got their first win of the day thanks to a 22.83 from Jasmine Alkhaldi in the women’s 50 free. That’s two-tenths short the time that she was at the Arena Invitational mid-season, but as the only swimmer in the conference able to get under 23 seconds all season (including at this meet), it was still enough for the title.
UC-Davis’ Haley Porter took 2nd in 23.02, and Loyola Marymount’s Kijrsten Magnuson topped off the podium in 23.13.
Men’s 50 Free – FINAL
With the defending champion Dillon Virva and his team UNLV no longer in the conference, this men’s 50 free title was up for grabs. BYU’s Jordan Fletcher reached out and snatched it for the Cougars’ second-straight event win, marking a 20.17 for the win.
Though he got the title and the 16 points that go along with it, the Hawaii men made up a huge scoring load with three swimmers in the A final and two in the B-final. That includes runner-up Karl-Richard Hennebach and Ali Maclean in 20.32 and 20.33, respectively. They needed that surge to maintain contact with the meet’s overall leaders in the three team battle.
