This evening, we exchanged emails with Notre Dame College head coach Mark Dziak, who is the president of the Appalachian Swimming Conference, and he shared his conference’s plan for dealing with the weather that has gripped the east coast of the U.S.
The meet will be held in three timed-finals sessions: Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Saturday night.
The Appalachian Swimming Conference, as the name implies, is a swimming-only conference that includes teams from the NCAA’s Division II and Division III along with the NAIA and even some ‘independent’ schools.
Their meet is being held at the Christianburg Aquatic Center, home of the Virginia Tech Hokies, and coach Dziak says that “with the amount of snow that the are has been subjected to, travelling around town has been an issue for teams and meet officials. The facility has also been closed down with teams unable to use the pool.”
Dziak says though that “teams are keeping their spirits high and looking forward to competing tomorrow.”
Friday is supposed to bring more precipitation, but with highs in the afternoon of 42 degrees expected, that should be rain for most of the day. Temperatures will plummet again over night, with more snow in the forecast. Saturday is then not expected to jump above freezing temperatures, but it should be a drier day.
Last year’s Appalachian Swimming Conference titles were split, with Notre Dame College winning the women’s meet by just 4 points over Wheeling Jesuit, and Wheeling Jesuit running away with the men’s meet. Those are both NCAA Division II programs.
