East Carolina Swimming And Diving Teams Split Dual Meet At ODU

The East Carolina swimming and diving teams spilt their dual meet with Conference USA rival Old Dominion as the women took down the Monarchs, 183-117, to improve to 7-0 this season. The men (3-2) were overtaken by ODU in the final event as the Monarchs’ 400 free relay team touched 0.18 in front of the Pirates’ foursome of Shawn HunterNikola SimicMichael Dugan and Trevor Irish sending the Pirates to a 149.5-144.5 defeat.

“It was a big win for the women, but a very tough loss for the men,” ECU Head Coach Rick Kobe stated. “We had a great training trip over the break and it was gratifying to see so many great swims as we continue to work toward the conference championship meet.”

The ladies finished the day with 32 medals across 16 events, capturing nine first-place finishes. Anastasia AmoiroglouDanielle Morrin and Anna Maria Svanbergsson each recorded a pair of victories.

Amoirolglou was five-tenths of a second faster than Svanbergsson in the 50 free to win her first event of the day before touching first in the 100 fly.

Svanbergsson was ECU’s first individual victor of the meet, capturing first-place in the 200 free and then taking gold in the 100 free. Morrin grabbed first-place in the 200 fly by 0.18 ahead of teammate Lauren Baker, then was more tan two seconds better than teammate Alexandra Jones in the 200 IM.
The Pirates also swept the breaststroke events with Megan Sellers winning the 100 and Charlsie Lincoln taking first in the 200.

In the diving events, Ashley Sams, took second on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. She was less the four points from qualifying for the NCAA Zone Championship on the 1-meter. Colleen Jones posted her personal best score of 251.99 on the 1-meter board to take third-place and Alicia Roueche also took third on the 3-meter.

The men also posted nine first-place finishes and 22 medal finishes with Rokas Cepulis sweeping the breaststroke events and winning the 200 IM. Attila Kiraly took first-place in the 100 and 200 back races, setting a pool record in the 200 back. Dugan was the winner of the 500 free.

Will Beliveau earned two gold medals in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving, putting up scores of 272.05 and 276.38, respectively.

In total, ECU won three of the four relay races and recorded eight medal finishes.

The Pirates will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 25 when they host Catawba and UMBC in a tri-meet beginning at 1 p.m. at Minges Natatorium.
