Lady Bulldogs beat Lady Red Bears in the New Year

In New Haven, Connecticut the Yale women beat the Cornell women in their home pool with a final score of 181-116.

The Yale underclassmen really showed up to this meet ready to play and continue to follow their impressive reputation into the New Year. They have been proof what work the recruiting department has put in and the progression of this team is really impressive stuff. Most notably: the distance events for Yale headlined by NCAA qualifier and two-time Ivy League Champion in the 1650 freestyle and 1000 freestyle Eva Fabian. Pre-college, Fabian won the 10k USA Swimming Open Water National Championships in 2011 and won the 5k in the 2010 Open Water World Championships. Her roll continues as she has won every 1000 and 500 free she has competed in during the dual meet season.

Teammate Isla Hutchinson-Maddox is the other distance girl to look out for as her freshman year has been nothing less than stellar. Hailing out of AGUA, her work pre-college includes a 16.28.33 in the 1650 at the 2013 NCSA Junior National Championships at the age of 17 and her times continue to get better. Her best time pre-college in the 1000 free is a 9:50.38 at the 2013 NCSA Junior National Championships and her in-season time of 10:18.05 in this past weekend is sure to prove a large drop, considering a good taper is in order.

Michelle Chintanaphol is our other Yale swimmer to look out for. This high school All-American backstroker out of Nashville Aquatic Club currently headlines the A-relays for Yale and a strong competitor in the 200 IM. Yale really needed a strong backstorker and shows real potential in her short free events with a pre-college time of 52.44 in her 100 free.

Cornell flyer Jenna Immormino shone strong in this past meet as she starred in the winning 200 medley A-relay to finish with a time of 1:47.02. Her win in the 50 free not only showed her versatility but also depth that Cornell needs to pull ahead in this next part of the season. In everything she swims, she swims well and consistently plays a vital asset in promoting this team.

In the 200 medley relay, the Cornell A-relay of Dani Sims, Kim Jerome, Immormino, and Cari Stankaitis took first. Second place was the Yale A-relay of Chintanaphol, Ali Stephens-Pickeral, Anna Wujciak, and Olivia Jameson with a time of 1:49.16. Victoria Kuhn, Chandra Yueh, Katie Murphy, and Louisa Hoffman took third for the Cornell B-relay with a time of 1:51.19.

Anna Wujciak won the 200 free for Yale with a time of 1:52.89 as Billy Murch Elliot took second place for Cornell with a time of 1:53.74. Third place was Cornell sophomore Jennifer Zhang with a 1:55.43.

Chintanaphol of the 200 medley Yale A-relay won the 100 back with a time of 57.98 as Cornell senior Stephanie Ah-quah took second with a time of 59.19. Jameson, also of the Yale A-relay, took third with a time of 1:00.33 which tied with Dani Sims of Cornell.

In the 100 breaststroke, Jerome took first with a time of 1:05.05. Second place was Elizabeth Larsen with a 1:09.28. Right behind Larsen in third place was Bethany Douglas with a final time of 1:09.42.

Sydney Hirschi represented the powerhouse freshman class of Yale as she won the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.05 as teammate Hutchinson-Maddox was right behind her with a time of 2:03.26. Third place was Isabelle Cecere with a 2:11.11.

Immormino won the 50 free with a time of 23.46 as Kina Zhou was right behind her with a time of 23.68 which was good for second place. Third place in the 50 free was Stankaitis with a time of 24.43.

Zhou came back for a first place finish in the 100 free with a 50.65 and traded places with Immormino who took second with a time of 50.78. Wujciak took third with a time of 52.59.

Chintanaphol dominated once again in the 200 back as she won with a time of 2:04.30. Second place was Courtney Randolph with a time of 2:08.70. Third place was Kuhn with a time of 2:09.76.

In the 200 breast, Meredith Drummond took first with a time of 2:23.54 as Jerome took second with a final time of 2:26.04. Third place was Yale sophomore Emma Smith with a time of 2:26.68.

Hirschi won the 100 fly with a solid in-season time of 55.85 as Immormino took second with a time of 56.72. Third place was Zhou with a 57.17. All three times stated above would have beat the winner of this same meet last year.

In the 400 free relay, first place was the Yale A-relay of Zhou, Jameson, Hirschi, and Wijciak with a time of 3:30.11. Second place was the Cornell A-relay of Stankaitis, Zhang, Anna Elling, and Yueh with a time of 3:36.82.
