Denver Claims Three Summit League Swimmer and Diver of the Week Awards

University of Denver Ross Edfort (Somerset, N.J.) won The Summit League Diver of the Week honor, while Dylan Bunch (Boulder City, Nev.) and Samantha Corea (Vancouver, British Columbia) were named The Summit League Swimmers of the Week, for the period of Dec. 2-8, The Summit League announced today.

Edfort received his second career Diver of the Week honor after recording a league-best score in the one-meter dive against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Iowa and Notre Dame at the University of Iowa Invite last weekend. The junior recorded a league-high 325.40 points in the prelims of the one meter before finishing sixth (200.45).  He also took fifth in the three meter (318.25) and third in the platform dive with a school record 307.25 points.

“Ross had a great weekend,” head diving coach Channing Kimball said. “He loves competition, and it showed in his diving. He was particularly excited to get his first Zone cut on the tower event.”

Bunch claimed his second career Swimmer of the Week award after winning a pair of events with league-record and NCAA top-25 times at the University of Iowa Invite.  The Pioneer won the 1,650 free in a league and school-record time of 14:54.60, which ranks fourth-best in the nation.  He became the first swimmer in league history to record a sub 15 minute time in the 1,650 free. The Boulder City, Nev., native got first place in the 500 free, touching the wall in an all-time league-best time of 4:20.31, ranking 23rd nationally.  He was also a member of the second place 800 free relay team (6:35.34), the 28th-fastest time in the nation.

“Dylan comes in and works hard day in and day out,” head coach swimming Brian Schrader said. “He is on the verge of becoming an elite level athlete.

I think we’re just starting to see what Dylan’s capable of.”

Corea earned her first career Swimmer of the Week honor after winning four individual event titles in league record times, including a pair of NCAA top-20 times. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native claimed top times in the 50 free (22.72), 100 fly (52.72), 100 back (53.44) and 200 back (1:53.78), recording all-time league-bests in each event.  Her 200 back time ranks 10th in the nation, while her 100 fly time is 17th.  The junior also helped her team to three top-three relay finishes, taking second in the 400 medley (3:41.68) and third in the 200 medley (1;41.09) and 400 free (3:21.10).  All three relay times were league-bests this season, while the 400 medley and 400 free times were the fastest times in league history.

“Sam won four individual events this weekend, so what more could we ask for?” Schrader said. “I know that in addition to those four individual wins she was a really solid relay contributor and helped us to a school record in her last event. She’s on the verge of getting to a special place too and she’s doing great things for our program.”

The Pioneers end their fall season with a team training trip to Puerto Rico. Denver then kicks off 2014 by hosting BYU (M/W) and University of New Mexico (W) on January 17 at El Pomar Natatorium.
