Loughborough University walked away with another British University and College Sports short course championship title setting 14 records in the process. Loughborough has been the top sporting school in Britain for the last decade winning winning the BUCS overall title every year since 2002-03.
At this year’s BUCS Short Course Championships Loughborough dominated their competition collecting 401 points with Swansea finishing second with 268 points.
Top five teams were as follows:
- Loughborough – 401 pts
- Swansea – 268 pts
- Bath – 217 pts
- Edinburgh – 213 pts
- Stirling – 187 pts
The male swimmer for Loughborough was easily Andrew Barrett who won four events, all in meet record time; 100 freestyle (48.04), 200 freestyle (1:43.38), 50 butterfly (22.98) and 100 butterfly (50.62). Barrett’s 200 freestyle result puts him eighth in the world rankings.
Andrew Weatheritt also had a pretty good showing winning both the 50 breaststroke (27.12) and 50 freestyle (21.67) in meet record time.
Ryan Bennett of Stirling swept the men’s backstroke events recording a competition record in the 200 meter distance; 50 (24.22), 100 (51.72) and 200 backstroke (1:54.17)
On the women’s side the most thrilling race was in the 200 freestyle where Rebecca Turner, Caitlin McClatchey and Sophie Smith swam the entire race with no more than 32 one-hundredths of a second separating the three. Turner hit the wall first winning in a new meet record time of 1:56.36. McClatchey finished second posting a time of 1:56.56 followed by Smith who recorded a 1:56.61.
Turner also came away with another victory in the 200 backstroke setting another meet record winning in a time of 2:08.85.
Loughborough’s top female swimmer was Emma Wilkins who set meet records on her way to victories in the 50 freestyle (24.60), 100 freestyle (54.09) and 50 butterfly (26.08).
