Janet Hu Breaks Tie; Now Sole Holder of 17-18 National Age Group Record in 50 Yard Free

In day 1’s finals of the 2013 USA Swimming Winter National Championships, 17-year old NCAP swimmer Janet Hu has broken the tie she created in prelims as the fastest 17-18 50 yard freestyler in history.

Hu swam a 21.82 in the individual 50 free final, and though she slid down two spots from the second-seed she held after prelims, that now goes down as the best swim ever by a 17-18. The old record was a tie between her and Tennessee’s Faith Johnson at 21.89; Johnson’s swim was done at the end of her freshman year of college at the 2013 NCAA Championship meet.

Hu’s night didn’t start off as well with a 22.10 leadoff on NCAP’s 200 free relay, slower than she was in prelims, and then another add in the 200 IM to take 6th in 1:57.76.

But the resilient Stanford commit came back in her 3rd swim of the night to get the record.

Full, live meet recaps are available here.

Amazing performance in her 6th race of the day!
She was in lane 5 alongside the legend Natalie Coughlin and she hasn’t been impressed.
If she still has some energy, I predict a monster 100 fly tomorrow.
