Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh were neck and neck tonight next to each other in the 200 IM. Douglass earned the win in a 2:07.76 ahead of Walsh who swam a 2:07.99.
The two lead the US women so far this season in the event. Douglass stands at the top American as she swam a 2:07.05 at the 2024 World Championships in Doha. That time also stands as a personal best. Walsh’s season best is a 2:07.63 that she swam back in January at the Pro Series stop in Knoxville. The two are the only swimmers to be under the 2:08 mark this season.
Walsh has confirmed the event will be in her lineup at US Olympic Trials in just two weeks. Douglass has said before that she is between the 50 freestyle and the 200 IM. Semifinals of the women’s 50 freestyle occur right before the final of the 200 IM at Trials.
Both swimmers will look for another Olympic berth in the event. In 2020(1), Walsh won silver in the event in a 2:08.65 while Douglass won bronze in a 2:09.04.

The two were tied at the 50 mark, both out in conservative 28.12s on the butterfly leg. Douglass took her butterfly leg out slower than before but worked the backstroke and freestyle legs of the race. Walsh also was slower on the butterfly leg but saved up for the freestyle leg.
Beyond the performance (and the hype), this (the photo) is a perfect reflection of natural human achievement in the pursuit of excellence; a relatively speechless expression of power and grace. One, that I am sure will be lost on the culture.
Kudos to Jack Spitser for being the right person, in the right place, at the right time. He should be awarded for this gift of art.
Great to see KD playing with her splits in the run-up to Paris. Under 2:06.00 is coming. Can’t wait for Rowdy to go berserk like 2023 when she shattered the SCY record by 1.7 seconds.
If I were coach Todd DeSorbo, I would strongly advise Alex Walsh to drop the W 100 BR and focus on the W 200 BR, W 200 IM.

You always have to take the pbs into account but the most important thing is to win the race, as both have done.
Unless huske drops two seconds from best time I think Douglass and Walsh are the team in this event. It definitely is crazy that four women could go under 207 in Paris. Definitely the most competitive women’s event.

Entirely plausible. She has skipped numbers before in setting records. It will be a fab race.
And yet not a single one will win an individual gold….

I agree with Jalen honestly nothing has changed since last year in fact with Macintosh and mckeon in the 200im I will be one less gold for the Americans, and seriously doubt dressel replicates what he did in Tokyo too much has happened since then not to mention the emergence of younger swimmers like liendo etc…
If you think that you’re not watching. KD has been working on the BK and the combination of strokes to produce overall improvements. I do like that the USA critics are sleeping on her. It’s coming.

Seriously how do you know they won’t win? Both girls have been very close to McIntosh’s times, and of course Ms. McIntosh just set the WR in the 400 IM; but went 2:07.0 in the same meet (her trials meet). These ladies just went 2:07-high at a last chance meet. I think it’s a toss up tbh. I mean yes, Summer has youth on her side (even though the other girls aren’t at all old whatsoever lol), and to be frank we have seen swimmers before break a world record early in their career and then kinda not follow up.
