The Iowa women’s swim team hosted Nebraska and South Dakota State this weekend. Iowa improved their record with two wins, Nebraska split with one win and a loss, and South Dakota State fell to both teams. The meet between Iowa and Nebraska was close, but mid major South Dakota State was out-gunned this weekend. SDSU will fair well at the Summit League Championships come february when they swim at IUPUI at the Summit League Championships.
Nebraska’s 200-yard medley relay team of Jacqueline Juffer, Shannon Guy, Natalie Morris and Taryn Collura won the meet’s opening event, edging Iowa by 1.03 seconds to give the Huskers an early lead. However, the Hawkeyes would win three of the next four events to forge ahead.
In the second event of the evening, Iowa’s Becky Stoughton won the 1000 free in 10:18.98. This marked the first time Stoughton has competed this fall, after working her way back from an injury to start the season. Stoughton would later post a second event victory, claiming the 500 free in 5:01.63.
The Hawkeyes posted a second 1-3-4 finish in the 200-back. Senior Lindsay Seemann took the event in 2:02.40. Sophomore Maddie Bro was third in 2:06.00, while junior Pamela Breitrick finished fourth in 2:06.69.
Iowa swept the top three spots in the 200 IM. Sophomore Allie Orvis led the way to a first-place finish, touching out in 2:06.62, while freshman Emma Sougstad (2:06.88) and junior Haley Gordon (2:07.97) finished second and third in the event.
In the 200-free, the Hawkeyes finished first and second behind strong performances from Olivia Kabacinski and Emily Hovren. Kabacinski took the top time in 1:52.46, while Hovren touched in 1:52.94 to finish second.
Iowa posted a second 1-2 finish in the 100-fly when Gordon touched out in 56.24 to post an event win, while senior Abbey Tuchscherer finished second in 56.69.
The Huskers won the final relay of the day, winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:37.86. Even with winning both relays and taking the lead midway through the meet, they did not have enough to top the Iowa Hawkeyes.
All three teams will be preparing for their big winter meets over the next few weeks.
