St. Bonaventure Men’s Swimming come up short at Cleveland State

St. Bonaventure men’s swimming and diving team came up short against Cleveland State on Friday night (Nov. 8) by a score of 184-166.

Jimmy Martin started the meet strong, finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.25.  He kept the momentum going with a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21:00) and touched in at third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.54).  Martin and his teammates, Michael PilyuginViacheslav Shchukin and David Paccapaniccia won the gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:05.58.

A close race in the 100-yard backstroke led to Shchukin (52.77) and Ripley Danner (52.91) fishing second and third with times less than a half second apart.  Shchukin showed his dominance in the 100-yard freestyle, coming in two seconds before the second place swimmer with a time of 45:81.
Pilyugin finished strong for the Brown and White coming in at an overwhelming three seconds, before Cleveland State’s Ryan Blankenship, in the 200-yrad backstroke (1:52.55).    Pilyugin won the silver in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:4410
In diving action, Alex Marra finished third in both the 1-meter (256.5) and the 3-meter (251.63).
St. Bonaventure had first and third place finishers in the 200-yard individual medley.  Danner came in first with a time of 1:57.57 with teammate, Michael White coming in with a time of1:58.46.
Matt Rochna, Matt Goettler and Pilyugin all had second place finished on the day. Rochna came in with a time of 1:56.59 in the 200-yard butterfly.  Goettler touched in with a time of2:10.62 in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Pilyugin finished with a time of 1:42.54 in the 200-yard freestyle.
Matthew SchuttGregg Byrne and Rochna all contributed with third place finishes — Schutt in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.01), Byrne in the 1000-yard freestyle (9.54.73) and Rochna in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Bonnies’ next meet will be home at the Reilly Center Pool on Saturday, Nov. 16, when they take on Canisius.
