Although no new names were added to the Italian Olympic roster on day 3 of the nation’s Olympic Trials, one swimmer did gain an additional event.
24-year-old Leonardo Deplano had already qualified for Paris in the men’s 50m free but now he can include the 100m sprint on his agenda as well.
Racing in this morning’s heats, Deplano clocked a new lifetime best of 48.09 to take the top seed. That cleared the Italian Swimming Federation-mandated qualification standard of 48.29.
Deplano opened in 22.58 and closed in 25.51 to rip his previous career-quickest time of 48.61 to shreds. With Alessandro Miressi already having qualified for the 100m free, Deplano was the next in line depending on what transpired in tonight’s final.
Despite Deplano falling to 3rd place in a slower 48.70 in the main event, no one beat his morning swim which means he slid his name into the Olympic qualifying spot.

Are Miressi and Deplano unable to be bumped out now? Just wondering if, say, Ceccon goes 47.5 at Setti Colli, would one of either Miressi or Deplano miss out at that point? Or are they completely safe now for the 100 Free?
I have the same question. I find it very confusing about who is guaranteed a spot and who is only tentatively in a spot and open to being beaten at a later qualifying meet
Sette Colli will be used to fill the gaps, so Ceccon is out of the 100 free even if Deplano gives up his spot, as I think Frigo may be next in line as he’s just .16 behind deplano in the three Q meets. Settee colli will also fill the relay squads. Getting a FINA A standard in the first 3 meets or sette colli secures a spot but they may at their discretion allocate extra swimmers as let’s face it, they won’t have 4 women swim the FINA individual standards in the 100/200 free, even though they’re easier than then the federnuoto times….actually, it’d be shocking to see more than 2 women get it in the 100 free or… Read more »
All names listed in the article are guaranteed their spots. Sette Colli Trophy is only a supplementary selection.
Regulation is clear but the situation in the mens 100 free unfortunately not. Regulation states that Olympic team will be defined after these Champs: now in the 100 free are qualified Miressi (already from Winter Nats at the end of November 2023) and Deplano because his 48.09 in today heats is faster than Frigo’s 48.25 swum in the semi of Doha Worlds (TL 48.2 for the combo of Doha Worlds and these Nats). There will be a last chance in the 4×100 free relay last day (Saturday) for instance for Ceccon, if he’ll be swimming the leadoff: he or anyone else must swim faster than 48.09 to grab the Olympic 100 free slot with Miressi, excluding Deplano. It’s the same thing with Carson Foster not getting selected for Tokyo even if he dropped a world-leading 400 IM time after the US trials. Italy has had three rounds of selection meets – a lot of opportunities already. Sette Colli Trophy is only used to fill the free spots.
it is as Nuotofan says. Last chance to get a spot in the individual race is to swim a faster time in the first relay leg of the 4×100 free. Settecolli will only be used to fill gaps.
It is a mess of a system.
What happened to Federico Burdisso? Is he trying for any competitions?
He was ninth at Doha Worlds in the 200 fly (1.56.68). Probably he’ll try to qualify for Olympics at Settecolli (21-23 June) in the 200 fly and a fly slot in the medley relay
in the Italian forum where I write I’ve considered the early timing of Italian procedures of selection, with automatic Olympic slots to grab between late November 2023 and the beginning of March 2024. For instance Ceccon, after the medley relay, spoke of the usual heavy flu he had at the beginning of the year, so his form is still far from ideal.
Imo the Aussie model: Nationals at the mid/end of April as selection for juniors swimmers and training meet for the others, and real trials at mid June (in the great location of Settecolli) would be a better choice, but Italian Federation disagrees..
