Brady Welch has given a verbal commitment to join Arizona State University’s Men’s Swimming and Diving team beginning with the 2014-15 school year.
A distance specialist from Olney, MD, Welch should bring some depth to the Sun Devils in the longer races. His best time of 15:30 would have given ASU a top-ten finish in the mile at Pac-12s last year. His strongest short-course event so far might be the 1000, and while that’s not an event at conference championships, Welch’s 9:14 should pick up points for the Sun Devils in dual meets.
Welch is a senior at Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD, where he has had a couple of very exciting high school seasons. He has been a member of several record-setting relays at the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Boys and Girls Championships. Most recently, in February 2013, he teamed up with Leo Mercer, Jack Conger and Matt Colket to break the championship record in the medley relay and with Conger, Matt Colket and Thomas Colket to break the 400 free relay record. Individually he finished fourth in the 500 free (in the same race that Conger broke the national independent school record with his 4:13) and second to Conger in the 100 back.
As a member of Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club Brady Welch is able to focus on the longer races. Most notably this past summer he knocked 30 seconds off his seed time and climbed to a top-16 finish at Summer Juniors in Irvine with a 15:47 in the 1500.
Congrats Brady!!!
