CANTON, OH – Leading from start to finish, the Oberlin College swim and dive teams take both the men’s and women’s crown at the Malone Invitational on Saturday night. The Yeomen tallied 2,358 points, while the Yeowomen amassed 2,076 points to finish first among a field of 14.
Starting with the women’s 200-yard IM race, Audrey Weber clocked in at 2:23.78 to finish seventh. Oberlin’s James Moll (1:55.80) took first place on the men’s side of the race, with Leo Powers coming in third at 1:57.85. Moll’s time is the third best in school history, while Powers is the eighth.
Gretchen Lotter notched the next top-8 finish for Oberlin, placing seventh in the women’s 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:29.91. The Crimson and Gold dominated the men’s 500-yard freestyle race, with Miguel Siwady (4:39.82) and Chahine Said (4:39.87) going 1-2, before Jack Stewart tapped the pads at 4:58.56 for seventh. Siwady and Chahine lock in the new fourth and fifth-fastest 500-yard freestyle times of all time.
Finishing seventh in the 200-yard backstroke, Sophia Nicholson checked in at 2:22.35. Anika Kennedy found the Yeowomen’s lucky seven spot again, this time in the 100-yard freestyle race with a time of 55.80. The men’s 100-yard free was led by Erik Fendorf, who came in second place with a time of 45.99 to own the second-best time in program history. Daniel Bocsi came in at 48.03 for seventh place.
Riley Conklin led the 200-yard backstroke for the men’s team with a time of 2:06.13. Weber (2:39.94) placed in the top-8 yet again, this time coming in fifth in the 200-yard breast race.
Isaac Viviano snagged the first blue ribbon of the night for the men in the 200-yard breast. The junior’s time of 2:06.49 is just short of his personal best but is strong enough to finish as the third-best time in program history. Charles Matia came in just after Viviano in third place, with another impressive time that puts him on the top-10 performance list. Matia’s 2:12.54 is now the ninth-best time for the Yeomen.
The Crimson and Gold showed up and showed out in the 200-yard butterfly, placing a pair of swimmers in the women’s event. Rosalie Baron (2:24.07) and Lucy Lee (2:28.38) finished in third and eighth, respectively.
On the men’s side, Myles Felt showcased his speed for a first-place finish in 1:53.23, but his prelim time of 1:53.19 secured a new personal best for the junior. Felt also moves into second all-time for the event. Powers rounded out the top 3, finishing just outside the two-minute mark at 2:01.15.
Capping off a phenomenal showing in Canton, the 400-yard relay team of Hannah Hale, Elinor Frost, Kennedy, and Nyrobi Whitfield took first place in their event, with a time of 3:40.31. The team’s time is now the eighth-best time in program history.
In the final event of the night, the men’s 400-yard relay team claimed second place. The combination of Powers, Viviano, Siwady, and Fendorf finished the run in 3:10.23. In a weekend full of record performances, this team added one more as they finish with the sixth-best performance in program history.
With the midseason complete, the Crimson and Gold take a well-deserved rest before hitting the road for their next meet. The teams compete again on Friday, December 1 in a dual meet against John Carroll.
