Miami (FL) Secures Home-Opening Win Over FAU

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami cruised to a dual meet victory in its home opener Friday afternoon, toppling FAU at the Whitten Center Pool.

Competing without their diving contingent, the Hurricanes topped FAU, 166-128, in their first regular season dual meet at home.

Miami’s top entry in the 200-yard medley relay opened the meet in impressive fashion, with Emma Shuppert, Emma Sundstrand, Jacey Hinton and Talia Bates taking first place in a time of 1:41.79.

Mary Smutny won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:22.64) to sustain Miami’s hot start, while Jane Fitzgerald (1:53.19) won the 200-yard freestyle.

Kate Sommerstad was second in the 1000 free (10:39.56) and Jemma Burns was third in the 200 free. (1:53.96) to pile on early points.

The Hurricanes swept the 100-yard backstroke, with Bates (54.00), Shuppert (56.03) and Celina Kuehne (56.27) capturing the top-three finishes in the event.

Smutny (2:03.69) and Adrianna Cera (2:04.04) were second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard butterfly.

The hosts pushed their lead further in signature sprint events, with Jacey Hinton (23.22) taking first in the 50-yard freestyle and Savannah Barr (51.82) taking top honors in the 100-yard freestyle.

Shuppert also earned a win in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.33).

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men and women’s swimming & diving teams wrapped up a meet against the University of Miami on Friday afternoon.

The women took on a tough Hurricanes team, while the men’s team competed amongst themselves in an intrasquad matchup.

QUICK HITS

Women

  • Bilu Bianchi (1:04.22) and Nula Gow (1:05.15) took first and second place, respectively, in the 100 breast. The roles would be reversed in the 200 breast, where Gow earned the first place finish (2:23) and Bianchi placed in second (2:17.76)
  • Dolores Margni tallied the victory in the 200 fly (2:03.09)
  • Yasmine Safargar captured the win in the 200 IM (2:06.29)

Men 

  • Timo Paisley earned the top time in the 200 free (1:39.22) as well as the 500 free (4:31.76)
  • Jack Sheehan won the 100 breast (54.76)
  • Christoffer Weiss placed in first in the 200 fly (1:51.18)
  • Jacob Rubin took first place finishes in both the 50 free (20.26) 100 free (44.97)
ON DECK

No time to rest for the Owls, who will host the University of Toronto swimming team on Saturday at the FAU Aquatic Center beginning at 4 p.m.
