WORCESTER, Mass. – The Bucknell women’s swimming & diving team defeated host Holy Cross 201-99 at the Hart Center Pool Friday, topping the Crusaders for a seventh-consecutive time. The Bison claimed all but two of the 16 events to open the 2023-24 season 1-0.

Junior Rylie Giles won two events on the evening, touching the wall first in the 100 freestyle (53.74) and the 200 butterfly (2:11.08). Sophomore Kyla Kelly also had a strong opening meet, winning the 100 backstroke and swimming the first leg of Bucknell’s winning 200 medley relay team.

Two rookies posted individual wins in their first collegiate meet, as Kelly Byrne won the 1000 freestyle (10:44.57) and Sydney Dettmann placed first in the 100 butterfly.

Bucknell finished both first and second in four events and went 1-2-3 on the 1-meter board. Meghan Catherwood won the 1-meter dive, followed by first year Natalie Penman and senior Kate GottwaldReggie Frias won the 3-meter dive.

The Bison return to action on Saturday when they go up against Boston U. at FitRec Competition Pool at 1:30 p.m.

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Bucknell men’s swimming & diving team opened the 2023-24 season by topping the Holy Cross Crusaders 186-112 at the Hart Center Pool Friday, defeating the Crusaders for a seventh-consecutive time. The Bison placed first in 11 of 16 events and opened Patriot League competition 1-0.

John Gehrig touched the wall first in two events, winning the 100 backstroke (53.12) and the 200 breaststroke (2:07.75). Gehrig was also part of the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams.

A pair of Bison posted event wins in their first collegiate meet, as Finn Russell and Drew Greene won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, respectively. The sprint freestyles were particularly exciting for the Bison. In the 100, Greene (47.23) narrowly edged junior Chris Kopac (47.33) and fellow rookie Colin Smith (47.35) as the Bison went 1-2-3 in the event. In the 50 freestyle, Russell (21.66) came in just ahead of senior Chris Fabian (21.69).

Bucknell took first and second place in seven events.

On the boards, Jackson Vinarub won the 3-meter dive with a solid score of 272.55 that ranks just outside the school’s top 10 list.

Bucknell is back in action on Saturday when it goes up against Boston U. at FitRec Competition Pool at 1:30 p.m.

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women’s swimming and diving team fell by a 201-99 score to Patriot League opponent Bucknell on Friday during their home opener in the Hart Center Pool.

The setback sends the Crusaders to 1-1, 0-1 PL on the year while the Bison move to 1-0 and 1-0 in league play.

The Crusaders had standout performances in the 200-yard backstroke as sophomore Ainsley Nalen (2:05.20) and freshman Courtney Boghosian (2:08.69) finished in first and second place earning nine and four points respectively.

Freshman Devin Brindle added nine points to the team total via a first place showing in the 50-yard freestyle (25.01).

Holy Cross is back in action for the Worcester City Championship on Saturday, Oct. 21 hosted by WPI at 9:30 a.m.

The defeat sends the Crusaders to 0-2, 0-1 PL while the Bison collected their first victory of the new season.

Senior Charlie Nascimben (57.58) and sophomore Zach Bubonovich (58.25) brought home first and second respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke posting nine and four points each.

The freshmen duo of Austin Cutcher and Luke Parada picked up their first collegiate victories. Cutcher hit the wall first in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:50.45) while Parada scored a 273.68 in the one-meter dive.

Holy Cross is back in action for the Worcester City Championship on Saturday, Oct. 21 hosted by WPI at 9:30 a.m.
