Verbal commitments are the rage this fall on SwimSwam, driving a large audience fueled by college swimming passion.
Missy Franklin, 5-time Olympic medalist, was the top female recruit last year, and, arguably, the top college swimming recruit of all-time. Franklin gained a global fan-following from her swimming success and on her steadfast promise that she would not turn pro and attend college. For college coaches the stakes were high. Franklin points could go a long way and possibly deliver an NCAA Team Title to the right university. Many top programs were in the hunt. Franklin took all five recruiting trips and kept her opinions neutral publicly. No one truly knew what college program she would pick. When she did commit to Cal, she decided to have a little fun pranking Cal Head Coach Teri McKeever.

So you don’t have to pick your major at the university beforehand but merely you just try everything you’re interested in (or dip your toe in the water all over the board as Missy put it) to find out what feels the most suitable for you? Or is it just one of the privileges that youngsters with a couple of Olympic golds enjoy?
SwimFanFinland – each college and program is a little different, but generally speaking in American universities there’s a huge number of core classes you have to take (basic maths, sciences, histories – a lot of which is depressingly redundant from high school), and so no student has to necessarily declare their major right away. Many do, especially in more competitive majors, because there’s different rules to being accepted into a major coming out of HS than after a first year or two of school.
Most will know going into their 2nd (sophomore) year, and it’s rare to not be declared going into your 3rd (junior) year.
OK, thanks for your info!
There are some majors that require you to complete specific classes very sequentially, and you generally need to get on that track freshman year if you want to finish degree requirements in the traditional four years instead of going five years as is becoming more common. So you get earlier declaration of major in those programs like engineering or nursing compared to chemistry or English.
Just a little investigation. 🙂
Is there behind EmilyR something from Emily Silver?
A few clues for that possibility.
Emily like Emily.
R for Silver.
Most of your comments are about the Cal girls. You are always very well informed about the team. And Emily Silver is a former Cal swimmer.
You have made funny comments about the tweets from Amaury Leveaux. You read them and you understand them. So you understand French. And recently I have read an article on the USA swimming website about Emily Silver. I have learned she lives in Canada with her boyfriend and she takes French lessons.

Am I right?
haha Monsieur Sherlock Bobo Holmes!
thats quite an intriguing connection you made there – but sorry to disappoint ya, im just an ordinary gal not someone famous like Emily Silver! (or Ms Olivia Smoliga :P)
@ SwimfanFinland – anyone can be an undeclared major in college here in their freshman & even sophomore years, u dont have to be an Olympic gold medalist or anything like that 😀
I’m disappointed.
I was almost sure you were Emily Silver!
I was very proud of my investigation. 🙂
My clues were really good.
Ok. I was wrong.
But still happy to have you as great swimswam contributor.
