Matthew Adams made waves today at the South Carolina High School League 3A Championships. The uncommitted senior from Bishop England High School, won two individual events, and was on two winning relays. The meet was held at the University of South Carolina.
200 Medley Relay
Christ Church High School won the women’s 200 medley relay in 1:51.35. The team of Maddie Baker, Sydney Baker, Caroline Grant, and Cameron Beach dropped over four seconds to win the event. Hilton Head High School finished second with a time of 1:51.70.
Academic Magnet, the defending champions, won the men’s 200 medley relay. The team of Carter Brzezinski, Cooper Pitts, James Koval, and Alex Parler won with a time of 1:39.53. St. Joseph’s 200 medley relay finished second with a time of 1:42.54.
200 Freestyle
Sydney Baker won the women’s 200 free, just minutes after climbing out of the pool following the 200 medley relay with a 1:54.26. Hannah Craig was second with a 1:55.08 and Victoria Craig finished third with a 1:55.68.
James Koval won the men’s 200 freestyle after climbing out of the water following the relay, as well. He touched the wall with a time of 1:44.73. Talmadge Davis was second with a 1:44.92 and Brooks McCoy was third with a 1:48.89.
200 IM
Madison Field won the women’s 200 IM with a time of 2:09.32. Maddie Baker was second in 2:11.40 and LeeAnn Tiffany was third in 2:11.44.
Matthew Adams broke the state record in the men’s 200 IM, touching the wall at 1:50.78 for the win. Cooper Pitts was second in 1:55.63 and Adam Stenger was third in 2:00.92.
50 Freestyle
Katrina Kanopka won the women’s 50 freestyle in 23.69. Catherine Bendziewicz was second with a 24.13 and Peyton Wilson was third in 24.24.
Alec Rutkowski won the men’s 50 freestyle with a time of 21.91. Malek Varner was second with a 22.12 and Luke La Rochelle was third with a 22.22.
100 Butterfly
Elaine Zhou won the women’s 100 butterfly with a time of 57.07. Meredith Whisenhunt was second with a time of 57.14 and Maddie Baker was third with a 58.44.
Alec Rutkowski won the men’s 100 butterfly with a 51.73. Jack Story was second with a 51.99 and Bryan Barker was third at 52.43.
100 Freestyle
Katrina Kanopka won her second event of the meet with a 51.87 in the 100 freestyle. Catherine Bendziewicz finished second in 52.19 and Peyton Wilson was third in 52.43.
Matthew Adams broke his second meet record with a win in the 100 freestyle. He finished with a 45.32. Luke LA Rochelle was second with a 47.92 and Malek Varner was third with a 48.61.
500 Freestyle
Elizabeth Felix won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.28. Sarah Reamy was second in 5:10.88 and Meredith Whisenhunt finished third in 5:11.60.
James Koval won the second event of the night with a 4:39.69 in the 500 freestyle. Eddie Bateson was second in 4:50.08 and Brooks McCoy was third with a 4:50.41.
200 Freestyle Relay
James Island relay won the women’s 200 freestyle relay. The team of Stevie Dupree, Peyton Wilson, Mary Alice Dupree, and Hannah Craig won with a time of 1:41.31. Academic Magnet was second with a time of 1:42.92.
Bishop England won the men’s 200 freestyle relay. The team of Kurt Stieby, Jack Story, Malek Varner, and Matthew Adams won with a time of 1:27.04. Academic Magnet was second with a 1:30.87.
100 Backstroke
Maggie Langdale won the women’s 100 backstroke with a 58.55. Elizabeth Felix was second with a 58.98 and LeeAnn Tiffany was third in 1:00.79.
Mason Bryan won the men’s 100 backstroke with a time of 53.36. Talmadge Davis was second with a 53.79 and Jack Story was third with a 54.27.
100 Breaststroke
Sydney Baker won the 200 IM with a time of 1:06.93. Elaine Zhou was second in 1:07.37 and Lauren Konopka was third with a 1:07.51.
Cooper Pitts won the 100 breaststroke with a 59.21. Walker Harwell was second with a 1:00.53 and Andrew Nichols was fourth with a 1:01.94.
400 Freestyle Relay
Hilton Head won the women’s 400 freestyle relay. The team of Elizabeth Felix, Amelia Rzeczycki, Victoria Gill, and Madison Field went 3:38.46 to win. James Island High School was second with a 3:39.49.
Bishop England won the men’s 400 freestyle relay to finish the meet. Jack Story, Kurt Stieby, Malek Varner, and Matthew Adams finished at 3:12.90. Academic Magnet finished second with a time of 3:18.09.
Nice going Matt…..BTW….Alec Rutkowski, Katrina Kanopka, James Koval also won both of their events! Maybe not state records but….kuddos to their efforts and hard work!
Matthew Adams is a great person, and a fantastic swimmer. It’s great that he did so well at the meet, which in turn got a run down of the top finishers and times in every event. This is a big swim meet, with some big names (Adams, Konopka, and future stars like the Bakers and Elaine Zhou ).
… However, it would have been nice to see the 4A championship, run later on the same day, get some love…. The qualifying times are faster than 3A’s, making for stiffer competition at the top, especially from the men. No mention of Junior from Fort Mill Jacob Kohlhoff’s 1:41 200 free, or Spartanburg High’s Brad Oberg winning the 100 fly in 50-point… Read more »

Matt is an great guy, awesome to train with every day and he is going to make a college very happy next year.
