The 2023 Hungarian National Championships kicked off today from Kaposvár with World Record holder Kristof Milak in the water.
Beginning his competition campaign with the men’s 100m free, 23-year-old Milak topped the podium in a time of 48.40.
Splitting 23.18/25.22, Milak beat out Nandor Nemeth who posted a time of 48.75 for silver and the only other swimmer under 49 seconds in the final. Daniel Meszaros was next in line for bronze in 48.75.
The World Aquatics ‘A’ standard for this summer’s World Championships stands at 48.51, so Milak got the qualification job done with his victory tonight. This is despite his result sitting far off his own personal best and Hungarian national record of 47.47 notched at last year’s European Championships.
The women’s 100m free saw Petra Senanszky strike gold in a winning result of 54.43. Her outing represents a big-time personal best, shaving nearly a second off other previous career-quickest time of 55.36 clocked at this same meet last year.
Senanszky, however, still fell short of the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 54.25 needed to automatically qualify for Fukuoka.
Gabor Zombori topped the men’s 200m IM podium this evening, logging a result of 1:58.94.
His performance outright assassinated his previous personal best of 2:02.13 in this event, a time he produced in the heats of the 2019 World Junior Championships.
Tonight, the 20-year-old split 25.44/30.62/34.43/28.45 to get under 2:00 for the first time in his career. He beat out runners-up Adam Telegdy and Balazs Hollo in the process, with the former touching in 1:59.20 for silver while the latter got to the wall in 1:59.40 for bronze.
In fact, Zomobori now becomes Hungary’s 5th fastest man ever in this 200m IM event.

He earned World Championships qualification with his performance this evening, as well as now inserts himself into the world rankings as the 16th fastest performer on the season.
Additional Winners
- Dalma Sebestyen earned World Championships qualification in the women’s 200m IM, touching in a time of 2:11.48.
- The men’s 100m breast saw Tamas Takacs get to the wall first in a time of 1:02.92.
- Aliz Kalmar was the fastest women’s 100m breaststroker, stopping the clock in 1:08.61 for the gold.
- Falling just .04 shy of qualification in the men’s 50m backstroke was Benedek Kovacs. The 24-year-old needed to post at least a mark of 25.16 for Fukuoka but got to the wall in 25.20.
- Lora Komoroczy was also close in the women’s edition of the 50m back, registering 28.48 for the gold medal when a mark of at least 28.22 was needed for this summer’s World Championships.
How will the teams be selected for this summer’s championships?
It seems like some swimmers are missing, including Kos
Kos has already qualified in the 200 back last week, and apparently his winning time in the 200IM final at last year’s euros will be sufficient to qualify him in that event. That leaves the 100 fly I think.
He also may have done enough at Westmont to be selected for two more events 100 bc and 4im
Oh yeah I forgot about the 400IM, I don’t think he will swim the 100back at worlds but who knows.
Definitely not 4IM. There are already two other swimmers ahead of him.
He could still qualify ahead of one of them, the 400IM isn’t really deep right now in Hungary.
No he can’t. There are 4 Hungarian swimmers had A cut time in 400IM and two of them already ahead of Kos. The team will be nominated right after the Hungarian championship – which means no time left for Kos…

The most of the swimmers ha already had the qualiciation to Fukuoka, beceause the last year results. The top2 will earn to be selected to the team
It has been remarkably unremarkable so far except for Zombori’s huge PB and the men’s 1500 free, in which both Betlehem and Rasovszky PBd and slipped under the olympic A cut for Paris. Milak is apparently ‘working on his technique’ which I took to mean he is trying to get rid of the Paltrinieriesque flailing around. Tomorrow begins with the men’s 200 fly so that’s something to look forward to.
