Gabe Mastromatteo, Emma O’Croinin Recognized As 2023 U SPORTS Swimmers of the Year

UBC’s Emma O’Croinin and Toronto’s Gabe Mastromatteo named U SPORTS swimming athletes of the week for the period ending February 26, 2023.

Emma O’Croinin earned U SPORTS women’s swimmer of the year honours after a stellar performance at the U SPORTS Swimming Championships in Victoria last weekend. O’Croinin started with a gold in the 400m freestyle before anchoring UBC’s eventual second-place finish in the 400m medley relay. The Edmonton native continued the podium finishes on the second day, kicking off with a 200m freestyle gold and finishing with a gold in the 800m freestyle relay. O’Croinin rounded out the weekend with a bronze in the 100m freestyle, followed by a gold in the 800m freestyle and finishing out with a silver in the 400m freestyle relay.

Gabriel Mastromatteo earned U SPORTS men’s swimmer of the year honours after an outstanding performance at U SPORTS Swimming Championships in Victoria. Mastromatteo opened the meet with a victory in the men’s 50m breaststroke in a U SPORTS record time of 27.53 seconds. Setting his second U SPORTS record of the weekend, Toronto’s Mastromatteo captured the men’s 100m breaststroke gold with a time of 1:01.38. Finishing up the weekend, the 2020 olympian collected a silver-medal performance in the 200 breaststroke and also helped U of T to a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay.
