While competing on day one of the 2023 Giant Open in France, 22-year-old Tes Schouten posted a new Dutch national record in the women’s 200m breaststroke.
Schouten grabbed gold in a time of 2:23.28, slicing .39 off of her previous lifetime best and Dutch record of 2:23.67 produced at the Rotterdam Qualification Meet last December.
Here in Saint-German-En-Laye, Schouten opened in 1:08.31 and closed in 1:14.97 to earn the gold ahead of two French swimmers. Charlotte Bonnet got to the wall next in a mark of 2:28.45 while Adele Blanchetiere rounded out the podium, well back in a result of 2:33.62 for bronze.
As for Schouten, her time at this competition would have rendered her the 4th-place finisher at the 2022 World Championships. There in Budapest, Schouten missed the final, settling for a 12th-place finish with a time of 2:26.25.
She blew that time to bits with her former record of 2:23.67 from December hacking nearly 3 seconds off of that Budapest result. And, now, her outing of 2:23.28 is inching Schouten closer to the 2:23 barrier.
Schouten’s time ranks her #2 in the world this season, sitting only behind Japan’s Reona Aoki who registered a result of 2:23.12 at January’s Kosuke Kitajima Cup.

Schouten also owns the Dutch national record in the LCM 100 breast with her PB of 1:06.09.
She is the fastest Dutch woman ever in SCM as well, owning the national standards of 1:03.90 in the 100 and 2:18.19 in the 200. Both of those outings were produced at the 2022 Short Course World Championships where her performances garnered her silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m distance.
