The United States isn’t the only country that is having a young women’s backstroke revolution. New Zealand 14-year old Gabrielle Fa’Amausili won the girls’ 50 backstroke at the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships in Dubai, and as part of a small New Zealand contingent turned a lot of heads with her 28.14: a new New Zealand National Record, breaking the 28.39 from Emily Thomas.
See above – despite a lot of noise from the background, after taking her win, Fa’Amausili gives the most important information to the media as she pronounces her name. For the young 14-year old, who is the second in her family to win a World Junior title (her cousin won the boys’ 50 free in 2008),
Wow only 1:03.9 as a 14 year old girl? You make that sound like it is slow
Compared to a 28.14 50? That’s slow relative to the 50 time.
Sounds like it’s pronounced exactly like it’s spelled, phonetically. She’s got a lot of work to do on her 100 back, only 1:03.9. But being only 14, she’s got plenty of time to do that!
