Defending 200 back champion Rhyan White Pulls Out of SC Worlds

USA Swimming has announced some last-minute changes to their roster for the 2022 World Short Course Swimming Championships.

Backstroker Rhyan White will miss the trip due to an undisclosed illness, while Erika Brown, Isabelle Stadden, and Claire Curzan all added new events.

White, a 5th year swimmer on the team at the University of Alabama, was seeded 5th in her specialty, the 200 meter backstroke. She was also seeded 7th in the 100 backstroke and 13th in the 50 backstroke.

White is the defending World Champion in short course in the 200 backstroke, winning the event in 2:01.58 last year before leaving the meet early over concerns about the onset of the omicron variant of COVID-19. White also won a bronze medal in the 200 back in long course this summer at the World Aquatics Championships.

Added Events

A trio of American women have added extra events to their schedule, which is allowed at the pre-meet coaches’ meeting. While no new swimmers can be added this late in the stage, swimmers’ events can be changed.

Three swimmers added events that White was previously entered in.

USA Swimming’s roster updates:

• Erika Brown – 50 back
• Isabelle Stadden – 100 back
• Claire Curzan – 200 back

Notably, that gives Curzan six individual entries at the meet. She’s entered in the 50 free, 50 back, 100 back, 50 fly, 100 fly, and now the 200 back.

Brown is entered in the 50 free and 50 back, while Stadden is entered in the 100 back and 200 back.
