2022 Speedo Winter Junior Championships: Combined East/West Results – Day 2

2022 Speedo Winter Junior Championships

Day 2 featured finals of the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free and timed finals of the 400 medley relay. Both the East and the West meets saw championship records fall by the wayside, and Thomas Heilman added a national age group record for 15-16 boys in the 200 IM at East.

Girls’ 500 Yard Freestyle – Finals

The West meet saw two sub-4:30s and another two 4:33s but the fastest time of the combined meets went to Sarasota’s Summer McIntosh with 4:27.52.

Rex Maurer of Rose Bowl blasted a 4:12.33 to take down both the West meet and the overall Winter Juniors record. But while the East meet was about 4 seconds slower, it was deeper. Aaron Shackell and the next three finishers all came to the wall within half a second of each other.

Bella Sims broke her second West meet record of the night with a 1:52.73 in the 200 IM, and this time she took down the overall Winter Juniors record as well. Alex Shackell led a 1-2 Carmel finish in the East meet, only missing that meet’s record by .9.

Maximus Williamson of Lakeside Aquatic Club took just over a second off his seed time, blasting a 1:42.07 PB in the 200 IM to win gold in the West and take a .7 second bite out of Michael Andrew’s West meet record from 2015. He would have broken Andrew’s 15-16 national age group record, too, had Thomas Heilman not just swum a 1:41.71 an hour earlier at the East meet, destroying the overall meet record and breaking the 15-16 NAG.

The East meet had two sub-22s with Alex Shackell and Erika Pelaez going 1-2 in 21.73 and 21.91, respectively, but the West had a tight field with the first 5 finishers all touching within .24 of each other.

Ethan Harrington from Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics clocked a best-by-.28-seconds 19.45 to earn the top spot in the overall 50 free ranking by .01 over Greater Toledo’s Scotty Buff. All told, 13 of the 16 swimmers in the two A finals clocked sub-20s at night.

The last meet record to go in the two girls’ meets was the 400 medley relay, where Berit Berglund, Molly Sweeney, Alex Shackell, and Meghan Christman combined to go 3:33.48 to erase the overall meet record that they had set last year.

Rex Maurer dropped 4.2 seconds from his previous 100 back PB to lead off the Rose Bowl’s 400 medley relay in 46.04. Daniel Lee split 53.11 on the breast, while Max Cahill (47.20) and Jonathan Gim (44.42) took care of the second half of the race to give the Rose Bowl a win and a new overall Juniors meet record. Bolles’ Landon Kyser (49.33 back), Wyatt Porch (53.85 breast), Carter Lancaster (46.78 fly), and Andy Kravchenko (43.99 free) finished fourth in the East final but combined for a final time of 3:13.95 to lower the 15-16 NAG record that Bolles had set in 2014.

Am I being lazy in wanting these combined results summarized further? (Yes. Yes I am.) It would be really nice to have the swimmers differentiated in some way so you could glance at the Top 8 and see whether East or West “won” the event. Maybe a W or E in front of, or after, each name??? I know I could do the math by reading each LSC myself but frankly I’d just lose track of the count by the time I went through the list.

Or, USA swimming could just host one meet. Is that too much to ask? (Yes. Yes it is.)

Disagree on the depth of the 500 free being stronger in east. Compare the times – the East’s 5th fastest was not faster than the West’s #4.

Baylor Nelson’s meet record in the 200 IM was from 2021, not 2015. Pretty sure he was 12 in 2015, which would make a 1:42.01 a little bit more impressive
