Week 1 Midseason Mashup: The Top Performers From NCAA Invites – Men’s Edition

After diving into the top female performances from last weekend’s onslaught of NCAA invitational meets, it’s now time to take a look at how the men’s swimmers stacked up.

Midseason invites present the first opportunity for the majority of teams to taper down, try and lock up NCAA qualifying times, and set the tone for what’s to come in the postseason.

The women’s side was primarily dominated by Virginia and Stanford, with 11 of the 13 individual events having the top time come from either a member of the Cavaliers or the Cardinal. The men were much more spread out, with seven different programs holding at least one top time in an individual event.

Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks (50 free, 100 free and 100 fly) and Arizona State’s Leon Marchand (200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM) had the top time in three events apiece, and Alabama and Georgia both have two swimmers with the No. 1 time from the weekend in one event apiece.

ASU also put up the top time in three of the five relays, including leading the 800 free relay by nearly seven seconds.

Below, we’ve put together the top 16 times across each men’s event from last weekend’s invites.

Some of the country’s top teams have yet to race in a midseason invite, most notably Texas and Cal, who will compete at the Minnesota Invite next week.

Note: Altitude-adjusted times are not factored into these rankings. This affects Colorado Mesa’s Ben Sampson, who swam adjusted times of 1:39.53 in the 200 back, 1:43.76 in the 200 IM and 3:45.23 in the 400 IM, all of which would rank inside the top 16. His unadjusted time of 1:40.73 in the 200 back ranks him eighth, while, if altitude-adjusted, he would be second.

One big takeaway is the strength of the men’s 50 free this year. A shocking six men have broken 19 seconds in the event already, with Texas and Cal still to race. Compare that to last season, where only one swimmer went sub-19 (Cameron Auchinachie) during midseason invites.

We’ve also seen four schools go sub-1:16 so far in the 200 free relay, a feat that only Texas did at this point last year.

TEAM STANDINGS

Thanks to swimming data specialist Andrew Mering, we’ve also scored out these times using the NCAA Championship points system. However, there are a few caveats:

  • This isn’t a direct reflection of how an NCAA Championship meet would be scored among the teams who raced last weekend, as swimmers weren’t restricted to three scoring events, and relay lead-off times are also factored in.
  • However, unlike the women where six different swimmers factored into the scoring in more than three individual events (including Kate Douglass with six), only two men, Jordan Crooks and Andres Puente Bustamante, scored in more than three events.
  • This is aimed to be more of a reflection of what the fastest swims were across the country rather than a look at an NCAA Division I preview. Any times from D2 or D3 swimmers that factored into the top 16 from the weekend were left in.
  • This does not factor in diving.
  • Had Ben Sampson‘s altitude adjusted times been used, he would’ve scored 21 points for Colorado Mesa—second in the 200 back, 15th in the 200 IM and 15th in the 400 IM.

Probably a dozen guys will go under 19 seconds in the 50 free at NCAAs. Maybe more.

Any chance ASU can push UT and NCState for 2nd or 3rd place this yr? It seems like ASU is going to score a tom of relay points, make a bunch of finals, and likely get 60 individual points from Marchand. (Hard to imagine him losing to Hugo in the 4IM now.)

Arizona State has a very good top-end, but they probably don’t have the depth to push those teams. That’s what’s so hard to calculate when looking at NCAA scoring.

For perspective: Arizona State was 55 points behind NC State, 138 behind Florida, and 200.5 behind Texas at NCAAs last year. While Marchand is amazing, breaking records doesn’t get bonus points. He scored 57 individual points out of a possible 60 last year. So even if he beats Hugo in the 400 IM, that’s only +3 points. Arizona State’s 400 free relay was 2nd last year, .02 ahead of Cal and .37 behind Texas. Texas lost a lot of that relay, Cal didn’t. So best case, +6 (+12 on the swing… Read more »

Curious if relay lead offs are factored in? Noticed the 50 Back wasn’t ranked as we’ve seen discussion for in the past?

Florida as a whole is considerably better than they were this time last year, and that 2:47 400 free relay was even missing a 42.0 flat starter. They look really good. The men need another backstroker though and the women need Nina Kucheran to step up in breaststroke.

Nina didn’t swim at invite, so hopefully will be a great addition come next big meet

I know Freeman wasn’t at the invite. I didn’t think he was a 42 flat starter though. Are you referring to him or someone else?

Julian Smith was not on the A relay

Right, good point. I was wondering why he was left off the A. Maybe Nesty knew something b/c he split a 43.2. Either way Julian Smith has really stepped up in a couple different events for the Gators

Wochomurka and his staff clearly have something working at Auburn. It’s cool to have a historic program being competitive again.

A couple of my takeaways for top teams:

NC State: The mono-infested packs’ down performance is not troubling. I would only worry if they are off at ACCs and their top recruits/depth don’t turn into scoring. There is a real chance ASU tops them if they aren’t careful.

ASU: Leon Marchand is super-saiyan and an absolute god. Freestyle depth has impressed me. This is their year to make a statement, as most of their free depth are 5th years (House,McCusker, Dolan, Hill, etc). They really finessed NCAA into making their team one year older than everyone else by redshirting 2020-21 season and STILL having 5th years lol. Let that sink in.

Florida: They are great but have a ways to… Read more »

UGA lost Luca and Sates from last year when they were 8th. Not sure they added any scoring frosh so all the points have to come from the same swimmers as last year….just a better version?!? I don’t see their relays stepping up without Luca/Sates and no true breastroker! They are very backstroke heavy team! If Versfeld gets them in top 10, he has done a very good job!

Stanford wasn’t a fluke they didn’t even swim that well last march. I agree they look kind of weak right now especially without Minakov

Dolan and Hill are not 5th years

doc Hudson is correct. They’re redshirt juniors. So they’re in their 3rd of 4 seasons of eligibility.

(We have to remember that Arizona State doesn’t really have 5th years. They sat that year out. They’ll have redshirt seniors, who will be in their 5th year of college, but they won’t get 5 years of eligibility).

For some reason, it feels like arizona state’s whole team is 5th years idk why

I think Stanford is really strong on paper. I was unimpressed with their invite performances, but their core is solid. Polonsky, McAlister, Forst, Maurer and Minakov will all do well individually and form a solid relay squad (with Minakov being the obvious engine room there). They’ve also grabbed some good recruits that still have time to pan out
