Louisville’s Albiero, El-Araby Named ACC Swimmers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Louisville swept the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimmer of the Week awards with Abdelrahman El-Araby and Gabi Albiero named the ACC Men’s and Women’s Swimmers of the Week, respectively. Miami’s Max Flory earned the ACC Men’s Diver of the Week for the third time this season and North Carolina’s Aranza Vazquez collected her third ACC Women’s Diver of the Week award of the season.

ACC MEN’S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK

Abdelrahman El-Araby, Louisville, Jr., Cairo, Egypt
El-Araby recorded four first-place swims and six NCAA ‘B’ zone times at the Purdue Invitational. Individually, the Cairo, Egypt, native placed first in the 100 free in 42.85 while participating in the four top relays of the day – the 200 free (1:17.28), 200 medley (1:24.52), 400 medley (3:08.12) and 400 free (2:52.02). El-Araby’s time of 19.58 placed second in the 50 free while his 47.42 in the 100 fly earned him a ‘B’ zone time. The 200 medley relay is the third fastest in the nation. The 200 free relay time is the ninth fastest in the country, the 800 free relay is the fifth fastest, and Louisville is tied with ACC foe NC State with the fourth fastest time in the 400 free relay.

ACC WOMEN’S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK

Gabi Albiero, Louisville, Jr., Louisville, Kentucky
Albiero tallied seven first place finishes and three NCAA ‘A’ zone times to help lead No. 10 Louisville to victory at the Purdue Invitational. Individually, her first-place, NCAA ‘B’ zone time in the 100 free of 474.49 is the seventh fastest time in the nation. The Louisville, Kentucky, native also won the 100 fly in 51.18 for another ‘B’ time and placed third in the 50 free in 21.90. She participated in five first-place relay teams: 200 medley (1:35,01), 200 free (1:27.03), 800 free (7:05.82), 400 free (3:12.47) and 400 medley (3:32.22). The 200 medley relay is the third fastest in the nation. The 200 free relay time is the fourth fastest in the country, the 800 free relay is the fifth fastest, and Louisville is tied with ACC foe NC State with the fourth fastest time in the 400 free relay.

ACC MEN’S DIVER OF THE WEEK

Max Flory, Miami, Jr., Fairfax, Virginia
Flory won gold in the 3-meter event at the Ohio State Invitational with his score of 425.70. He won silver in the 1-meter with a 280.35 and captured bronze in the platform with a 408.45. Flory earned NCAA zone scores in all three events.

ACC WOMEN’S DIVER OF THE WEEK

Aranza Vazquez, North Carolina, Jr., La Paz, Mexico
Vazquez scored above 300 and earned NCAA zone scores in both her dives at the Tennessee Invitational, competing amongst three ranked teams and multiple ACC divers. The La Paz, Mexico, native placed second in the 1-meter with her score of 319.00, finishing first amongst five ACC divers in that event. She also placed second in the 3-meter event with a season-best 375.00, the top score amongst six ACC divers in that event.

If you haven’t noticed by now, the selection of ACC Swimmers and Divers of the Week is about as random as the lottery. I used to care; I have learned to move on.
