In Memoriam

by Michael O.  Zahn

For those swept away
by the infinite
current,
we swim.

We undulate

in memory of
the unmoving.

We dive
in memory of

those who will never surface.

We grab each breath
in memory of
those whose chests no longer rise and fall.

We time our laps

in memory of

those whose course is timeless

And . . .

Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes,

we remember that we, too,

will be swept away

so we swim
