Annika Parkhe Breaks IHSA Record with 52.13 100 FL, Posts 23.2 FL Split on Medley Relay

The finals of the 2022 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Girls Swimming & Diving Championships took place on Saturday at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont. New Trier won the title for a second-straight year, scoring 149.5 points to beat out Hinsdale Central. It was a closer finish for New Trier than last year, where they won the title by an 82-point margin over runner-up Barrington. Barrington was tenth this year.

Deerfield junior Annika Parkhe was exceptional once again in finals, bettering her times from prelims. Parkhe kicked things off on the 200 medley relay, where she helped Deerfield to a third-place finish with a head-turning 23.29 fly split. Parkhe then raced in the next event, the 200 free, which she won in a time of 1:45.60. The time comes in just off Parkhe’s personal best of 1:45.21 and her IHSA Record of 1:45.53, which she swam last year.

Parkhe then went on to win the 100 fly in 52.13, setting a new personal best and breaking the IHSA Record. Parkhe set the record last year at 52.72, then cracked it in prelims of Friday, where she swam a 52.30, which was a personal best at the time. She lowered the mark again by 0.17 seconds in finals, roaring home with a 27.71 on the second 50 of the race. Her swim also broke the FMC Natatorium pool record in the event.

Parkhe concluded her meet with a 22.59 split on the anchor leg of Deerfield’s 200 free relay, which won the ‘B’ final.

Hinsdale Central senior and Wisconsin recruit Kit Schneider was fantastic once again, kicking her meet off with a field-leading backstroke split of 25.34. She then crushed her personal best in the 50 free, winning the race convincingly with a 22.59. Her previous best stood at 22.95.

Schneider then anchored the Hinsdale Central 200 free relay in 22.60, helping them to a second-place finish. In her final race of the day, Schneider split 49.84 on the third leg of Hinsdale Central’s 400 free relay, which ended up coming in fifth.

Barrington senior Jenna Kerr, a future Iowa Hawkeye, blew away her personal best in the 500 free, tearing to victory in 4:46.30. Kerr touched first by over 11 seconds, breaking the FMC Natatorium pool record in the process. Kerr’s previous best in the event was a 4:49.72, marking an improvement of 3.42 seconds.

St Ignatius senior Julieta Tracy, a Notre Dame recruit, was a double event winner. She first won the 200 IM in a very tight race with St Charles North sophomore Isabelle Beu. Tracy built a lead on the front half of the race, splitting 56.29 on the opening 100 to Beu’s 58.23. Beu closed the gap on breaststroke, splitting 34.19 to Tracy’s 35.86. She again out-split Tracy on freestyle 27.96 to 28.13, but Tracy’s opening lead would prove to much to overcome. Tracy won the race in 2:00.28, just ahead of Beu’s 2:00.38.

Tracy then went on to win the 100 free in 50.42, posting the fastest splits in the field on both 50s of the race.

Rolling Meadows freshman Vera Conic tied with New Trier sophomore Tierney Lenahan in the 100 back. Lenahan got out to a slim lead on the first 50, while Conic was slightly faster on the second 50.

Carolina Kramer, a Hinsdale Central senior, won the 100 breast in 1:02.30. The Arizona recruit was out in 29.25 to open up a small lead on the first 50, then held on through the finish.

Cary-Grove junior Maggie Bendell won diving with a score of 462.50.

New Trier saw Tierney Lenahan (25.79), Charlize Escasa (27.67), Zara Bolton (24.93), and Megan Marquardt (23.57) team up for a 1:41.96, touching out Hinsdale Central (1:42.16) for the win.

Stevenson won the 200 free relay, where Abby Collins (23.89), Stephanie Kirova (22.87), Linnea Florin (23.45), and Izzie Gattone (22.85) combined for a 1:33.06.

St Charles North won the 400 free relay in 3:25.19. Tessalina Stavropoulos (50.71), Enya Linson (52.09), Elizabeth Bawolek (52.13), and Isabelle Beu (50.26) got the job done.
