Noe Ponti Wins 2 More, American Women Take 3 Titles at Bolzano Day 2

SWIMMEETING ALTO ADIGE

Noe Ponti wrapped up a historic performance at the legendary Bolazno international meet in Italy on Sunday with two more event wins. That gave him five total at the meet, which matched Thomas Rupprath’s record from 2001 and 2002.

Ponti added another meet record, this time in his best event the 100 fly. He won the race in 49.88, which beat the record of 50.56 set at last year’s meet by Simone Stefani. Ponti swam this race last year, but was only 50.81, showing that he’s in a much different place this season than he was 12 months ago coming out of the grueling delayed Olympic cycle.

Ponti also won the 50 free in 22.38, finishing just barely ahead of two swimmers from a rising Portuguese team: Miguel Marques (22.41) and Fernando Souza da Silva (22.47). After swimming a best time in the 100 free on Saturday, Ponti’s time knocked half-a-second from his previous personal best in the 50.

In total, Ponti’s meet ended with three new personal bests, plus two Meet Records (neither of which were personal bests). Each of his five results at the meet was a noteworthy swim for one reason or the other.

The meet awarded prize money for a few things, including breaking records and having the fastest aggregate time in a stroke when the 50m and 100m races of that discipline, plus the 100 IM, added together. By winning the 100 IM, the 50 and 100 meter butterflies, and the 50 and 100 meter freestyles, Ponti picked up 300 Euros.

In addition, he broke two Meet Records. While neither of his records were “Jackpot” events, where records have stood for two or more years, he still received 250 Euros in each event for breaking records from last year’s meet.

In total, that gave him 800 Euros of prize money at the meet (about $800) as the meet’s top earner.

Other Results

  • 34-year old American Madison Kennedy won the 50 free in 25.28 on Sunday. Kennedy, who has been a fixture at this meet for years, grabber her 8th career Bolzano win. That time also secured her the 250 Euro bonus for summation of 50 free, 100 free, and 100 IM.
  • She was one of three Americans to win on Sunday. Kendyl Stewart, who made a surprise return to racing this week after two years away from competition, won the 100 fly in 1:01.06. With a 50 fly (27.19) win on Saturday and a good performance in the 100 IM, she won the women’s butterfly aggregate title.
  • Ali DeLoof, a short course specialist who hadn’t raced since January, won the 50 backstroke on Sunday in 28.07 to wrap a double of her own (1:00.74 in the 100 back). While she placed just 20th in the 100 IM, her time was good enough for her to cruise to a win in the women’s backstroke aggregate.
  • Russian Nika Godun was the other aggregate women’s winner on the weekend. After winning the 50 breast (30.06) and 100 IM (1:00.49) on Saturday by wide margins, she cruised to a five-second margin-of-victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.15 on Sunday.
  • Luca Scampicchio from the host team in Bolzano set two more Regional Records: 55.71 in the 100 fly and 27.14 in the 50 back. He previously set a regional record in the 100 free on Saturday and a Provincial Record in the 50 fly.
  • Ponti’s Swiss coutnrymate Thierry Bollin won the 100 back in 52.17 to secure the backstroke aggregate.
