MUNCIE, Ind. – – It was a great night at the Lewellen Aquatic Center as both the men and women picked up team wins over Eastern Illinois in their home opener Friday evening.

Both squads finished their first dual meets of the season with 10 event wins, with the men earning a 170.5-86.5 win, while the women earned a 163-93 victory.

On the women’s side, seven different Cardinals picked up individual wins with two each from senior Apsara Sakbun and sophomore Hannah Jones. The elder of the Sakbun sisters won both the 100 back (57.96) and the 100 fly (58.98). Jones won the 50 free (24.48) and 100 back (2:06.86).

The younger Sakbun sibling also earned an individual win, as freshman Haley Sakbun swam away with the 500 free (5:15.31). She also swam anchor for the first-place 200 medley relay which opened the meet with a time of 1:48.08. She was joined on the relay by freshman Alyssa Messenger, senior Laura Wright, and sophomore Eliza Bader.

Messenger would also pick up an individual win, taking home first in the 100 free (54.13). Also earning individual event wins for the women were freshman Callie Tuma (1000 free / 10:49.14), freshman Kiran Stauffer (1:54.66) and junior Mary Kate Phillips (2:10.10).

On the men’s side, eight different Cardinals picked up individual event wins, led by senior Jack Wolfred. Wolfred won the 100 breast (1:00.05) and 100 free (46.79), while also swimming anchor for the first-place 200 medley relay which opened the meet in 1:33.86.

He was joined on the relay by freshman Ben Clarkson, junior Joey Garberick, and senior Landyn Riester. Garberick would add his second individual event win of the season, clocking in at 2:07.73 in the 200 breast.

Senior Owen Chaye was the fastest swimmer in the 200 free (1:43.47), while senior Patrick White turned in the fastest 50 free (21.54).

The Cardinals also swept the fly events, with freshman Kenny Reed touching the wall in 52.42 in the 100 fly and senior Bryce Handshoe taking the 200 fly in 1:52.66.

Rounding out Ball State’s individual winners were freshman Logan Ayres in the 200 back (1:54.73) and sophomore Michael Mitsynskyy in the 500 free (4:52.43).

The women’s squad returns to action tomorrow, with a 1 p.m. Mid-American Conference dual at Bowling Green. Next up for the men is a Friday, Nov. 11 dual at IUPUI.
