Coach’s Corner
Brandt Nigro on today’s meet: “Gritty is the word that best describes our team today. Coming off a great meet yesterday afternoon vs South Carolina followed by some late travel and an early morning meet – our team really needed to refocus, reset, and get it going quickly this morning. UNCW is always a tough place to race/dive and their team really gets up to compete against us! Their team, like ours, brings passion and energy, and their stands are always packed! The pool set up is much different than what we are used to so there were many factors that our team needed to adjust to at this meet. Our women had a great day both in the pool and on boards. Minh dominated the boards and Abby Gibbs provided a strong 1-2 punch to help our team today.

Molly Webber and Meghan Cole swam a VERY tough line-up today to make sure our team could compete and have a chance to win! As a group, I’m so proud of the resilience and no-quit attitude they bring each day. UNCW had more than twice the number of swimmers we brought today, but it didn’t matter to our ladies. They knew their job and where they needed to attack, and they fought to the end. For the men, we had a weird start to the meet when our 200 Medley relay finished 3rd due to a block malfunction. It cost us a lot of points and momentum, but they fought back and didn’t hang their heads.

As the meet went on, we chipped away at the hole we were in and got better throughout. Sam Wesley was a difference maker today (and all weekend) and continued to step up for the team. Isaac was our lone male diver today and stepped big getting a big win for us on 3 Meter. Jack Pogue got his first college win of his career today with a gusty swim in the 2 fly, essentially going a life time best in September. Yesterday was about performing when we were on, today was about finding a way to win when the going gets tough. It’s a special group of guys and I’m proud of the way they fight and take each other’s backs! It’s now time to get back to work and continue to prepare for our big meets in the coming months.”

Cadet’s Corner
Molly Webber’s take on this weekend:
“It was an awesome first collegiate meet experience. The team made it very fun, always standing on the sides of the pool being loud and starting chants and hyping everyone up. It was really cool to be part of such an enthusiastic and competitive group of young women. My teammates motivated me a lot this weekend. I am happy with how I raced – I wasn’t expecting to be so close to my best, but I think that the training has already made me stronger and fitter in just a few weeks.”

Jack Pogue’s thoughts on this weekend:
“Today’s meet was a tough challenge and we had to really fight for this win. Glad I could my part and pick up points for the team in the 2 Fly. Feels surreal to to get my first collegiate win, I owe it’s all to my team.

The upperclassmen have been working hard all summer/long course season and have been super excited to race as a team. Boosted by a super-engaged plebe class, everyone’s been getting ready to go to war together and race for each other. We can’t wait to keep working and show the swimming world what the Army team can do.”

Up Next: The men’s swim team returns to Crandall Pool to go up against Seton Hall on October 14 at 5 p.m.  The women will go back on the road to face Rutgers on October 7 at 11 a.m..
