BARCELONA – Toronto’s Martha McCabe and the women’s 4×200-metre freestyle relay will be in action for Canada at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona Thursday evening.
McCabe, who turns 24 Sunday, advanced to the semifinals in women’s 200-m breaststroke with a heat time of 2:25.91 in the morning. The reigning world championships bronze medallist enters the semis in eighth position.
Meanwhile, the relay team of Sam Cheverton, Barb Jardin, Brittany MacLean and Savannah King will be swimming for a medal. Canada advanced to the final with time of 7:56.64 in the morning heats, good for sixth spot.
Canada has sent a 34-member team (17 men, 17 women) to the world championships, which continue through Sunday. Swimming Canada’s broadcast partner Sportsnet will be airing a one-hour highlight show all eight days of the championships.
Two world championships rookies swam their personal bests Thursday morning. Calgary’s Russell Wood, 19, swam the men’s 200-m backstroke in 2:00.51 to finish in 21st place. Edmonton’s Ashton Baumann, 20, followed up with a time of 2:13.46 in the men’s 200-m breaststroke
Other Canadians swimming Thursday included Tera Van Beilen of Oakville, Ont., who came 21st in the women’s 200-m breaststroke at 2:31.34. Montreal’s Victoria Poon, 28, competed in the women’s 100-m freestyle, finishing 19th in a time of 55.30.
