Olympic bronze medalist Kieran Smith won the men’s 200 free from lane 6, having qualified fourth out of heats. Smith put up the fastest time in the world so far this season, winning in 1:45.25.
Top-seeded Carson Foster led the field at the 50 wall, but Smith took over at the 100 and never let up. Drew Kibler remained in the second position throughout the entire race, coming with .07 of Smith at the touch to nearly take the event. Kibler’s 1:45.32 is the #2 time in the world thus far.
Foster came in third, finishing a full second ahead of Trenton Julian, 1:45.66 to 1:45.69.
Coby Carrozza (1:46.87) and Trey Freeman (1:46.93) came in fifth and sixth, both swimming faster than the FINA “A” cut.
Drew Kibler came close for the podium in the 200m freestyle final, clocking in 1:45.01 to Tom Dean’s 1:44.98. Maybe next time Kibler and medal in this event.
USA won their first gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Budapest World Aquatic Championships since 2013.

Congrats to Drew!!! He threw down a great PB for the 2nd individual spot and I’m sure Carson and Trenton will be able to step up for the relay in Budapest. Excited for what’s to come for Team USA!!!

I mean deano split 1:45:8 from flat last time lol. Bro got carried. Richards was disappointing at trials and came 7th so he won’t go. Guy we don’t know because he swam the best in his career in the relays. Scott will always go fast. The team is just shaky

Having the 200 free at the end of a trials at the end of the week as the last event makes a difference, your top 4 boys hadn’t even swam 2 events, whilst deano Scott and guy had done the 200 fly 200 IM 400Im 100fly 100free, cya later
Don’t get too cocky. This result is good for USA’s relay, but it doesn’t make me any less confident we will sweep the floor with this embarrassing usa team in this relay till at least Paris. Dean and Scott and guy both have 1:44 flat starts… and they weren’t tapered at our trials… and all your swimmers will be slower at worlds…
Nope, guy best time is 1:45:1. And you say they weren’t tapered, but so were the American boys. Richards who split 1:45:0 isn’t even going lmao. You have two 1:44 flats which one went 1:45 high lead, a relay man that might not even perform to the same degree, and Litchfield that went 1:47.sure these times are at trials, but the situation is the same for the Americans
Richards was preselected for Worlds so he is going. There’s no way the American guys weren’t tapered for trials, but Guy and Dean were also definitely tapered for trials, probably Dunks too.
Richards was probably the only person who will be in the 800 free relay out of the 2 countries who wasn’t tapered for Trials.
Hahahaha, are you joking? James Guy not to the same degree, 7 out of his 8 last 200 fre relays he has split below 1.44.6 hahaha
Guy and Dean were tapered for Trials (Guy literally said that he was tapered after one of his fly victories at Trials and said he thinks most people at trials are tapered which probably means everyone who he trains with under Dave Mcnulty were tapered, i.e. Dean) and there’s no way Duncan went 4:09 in the 400IM without at least being semi tapered.
They still need that 4th guy. I thought it would be Luca but he didn’t look good in the 200m free.

The top 4 from this meet of Smith, Kibler, Foster and Julian compared quite well with the last 3 Olympic trials results that everyone seems to think was SO much faster.
2008 trials with full body suits:
(Phelps 1:44.10
Vanderkaay 1:45.85
Berens 1:46.14,
Keller 1:46.20= .33 faster than 2022
2012 trials:
Phelps 1:45.70
Lochte1:45.75,
Berens 1:46.56,
Dwyer 1:46.64= 1.73 seconds slower than 2022
And 2016 Trials:
Haas 1:45.66
Dwyer 1:45.67

Swimming for silver in the 4 x 200 – GB for gold 👍
Anything can happen, I was told GB was a lock for gold in the medley relay and they got beat.
Literally no one said they were a lock for Gold in the Medley
some people did although to be fair those are the same people that said the only individual US gold would be ledecky in the 1500
After Andrew’s 58.1, US were definitely the big favorites for the medley relay.
The better example would be the W 4×200 relay, Australia were massive favorites there. Even then it took the perfect storm of Titmus/McKeon swimming each being about a second slow, bizarre decisions by the AUS coaches, and all 4 Team USA members swimming out of their minds.
These things do happen of course. I mean, my username is tribute to that.
