Reigning NCAA champion Katharine Berkoff would not be denied tonight in the women’s 100 backstroke final at the ACC Championships, staking her claim as the one to beat at nationals next month by setting a new conference record in a time of 49.41.
Going head-to-head with UVA freshman Gretchen Walsh, Berkoff was the only swimmer in the field out sub-24 (23.88) and back sub-26 (25.53) as she lowered her own ACC Record of 49.74 to win a third consecutive conference title.
Berkoff, a junior, set the previous ACC Record at last season’s NCAAs en route to winning the event. She also demolished the Conference Championship Record of 50.45 from last season by more than a full second.

Walsh, who came into the meet with a PB of 50.61, clocked 50.13 to take second and set a new best time, moving up into 15th all-time.
Over at SECs, Alabama’s Rhyan White won the title in 50.18, making Stanford’s Regan Smith (49.97) the only swimmer other than Berkoff to have been sub-50 this season. White was the runner-up to Berkoff at NCAAs last year in 50.21.
