Winter Juniors Qualifier and NCHSAA 4A Champion Kyra Tonsil Commits to UNLV

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Kyra Tonsil, a high school senior at William Amos Hough High School in Cornelius, North Carolina, has committed to swim at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas next fall. She told SwimSwam, “I am excited to join this team because the coaching staff and current athletes have been absolutely welcoming to me with open arms.”

I’m super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas!! I’d like to thank all my amazing family, friends, and coaches for supporting me. Go Rebels!! ❤️🖤

Tonsil spent the first two years of high school in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she attended Homestead High School and trained year-round with the club team Summit City Aquatics. She and her coach Justin Max were invited by USA Swimming to attend the 2020 National Diversity Select Camp.

After moving to North Carolina, she joined SwimMAC Carolina and the Hough High School swim team. At the 2021 North Carolina High School 4A State Championships, she anchored the winning 200 medley relay, contributing to Hough’s team title.

A sprint specialist with a Winter Juniors cut in the 50 free, Tonsil competed at 2021 Winter Juniors-East, swimming in prelims of the 50 free and 100 free. She swam the same two events, plus the 100 fly, at Huntsville Futures last summer. Her best SCY performances in the 50/100 free come from Indiana high school states her sophomore year, when she went 23.23/51.88 and finaled in both events.

Best SCY/LCM times.

  • 50 free – 23.23/27.19
  • 100 free – 51.88/1:00.51

Tonsil will join the Rebels with Ashley Hughes, Kayleigh Lovell, and Scarlett Cao. UNLV won the Mountain West Conference championships last season for the first time since 2005, edging Nevada by a mere 9 points. Tonsil would have scored in the B final fo the 50 free and the C final of the 100 free.
