Vermont Catamounts Win 12 Events in Big Senior Day Win Over Siena

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Ella Church and Hally Laney each won two events leading a strong Vermont performance on Sunday as the Catamounts defeated Siena 177-117 at the Forbush Natatorium on Senior Day presented by the UVM Alumni Association.

“Today’s team performance was solid from top to bottom,” said Head Coach Gerry Cournoyer. “I am happy that our seniors were able to have a strong showing in their final home meet.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Vermont started the meet off with a win in the 200 medley relay. Alexis TorykianMina Poppas, Laney and Cailin Campbell combined to swim in a time of 1:51.29. They defeated Siena’s top team by .60 seconds.
  • Laney fed off the momentum from the early relay win to win the 200 fly and the 200 IM for the Catamounts. Laney won the first 200 fly of her career with a time of 2:09.69. It was also her first-ever win in the 200 IM, she beat the field by 4.23 seconds with a time of 2:13.80.
  • Church kept her good weekend rolling for Vermont claiming the 200 free and the 500 free for the Catamounts. For Church, it was her first win in each event this season.
  • In the second event of the afternoon first year Emily Rocco earned the first win of her career with a time of 10:46.38 in the 1000 free.
  • Sophomore Sophia Sinibaldi also earned the first win of her career with a win in the 100 fly. Sinibaldi won the race by .19 seconds with a time of 1:00.27.
  • Junior Jenny O’Neil picked up her first career win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.72. It was a season best time for O’Neil.
  • Rounding out the quartet of first time wins for the Catamounts was first year diver Sarah Campbell. Campbell claimed the 3m diving with a total score of 226.20, besting Siena’s Lydia Delano by 3.38 points. Campbell also placed second in the 1m diving Sunday.
  • On her Senior Day Kira Parker earned her second win of the weekend in the 100 back. She was the only swimmer in the field under a minute with a time of 57.76.
  • Junior Beth Hartog won the 200 back for UVM with a convincing margin of 3.59 seconds. Her time of 2:08.30 was her best in a dual meet this season.
  • First year Jackie House won her eighth event of the season in the 100 free. She won the event for the second time this weekend with a time of 53.54.

WHO’S NEXT
Vermont closes out the regular season next Saturday at noon as they return to the Tootell Aquatic Center to face Rhode Island once again. The Rams and the Catamounts tied for first place at the 2021 Harold Andersen Invitational in November hosted by URI.

BURLINGTON, VT – Following a month-and-a-half off from competition, Siena Swimming & Diving returned to the pool with regional dual meet action Sunday afternoon. The Saints traveled north to face the University of Vermont, falling, 177-117, in Burlington.

Despite the loss, the competition featured several bright spots, including personal best times and event victories. Junior Rory Kalac took home the top spot in the 50 free (24.52) and placed second in the 100 free (53.88).

Sophomore Talia Spenziero placed first in the 1-meter diving event (232.80), while classmate Audrey Shultz won the 200 breast (2:30.39) and took second in the 100 breast (1:10.16). The Saints ended the day with first place finish in the 200 free relay, with the team of sophomore Demi Bobarakis, freshman Kylie Carter, freshman Shaylea Triller, and Kalac leading the way.

Bobarakis exhibited a best time in the 200 fly with a mark of 2:14.30, while sophomore Emily Sulik recorded a best in the 200 back (2:16.41).

Siena’s road to the 2022 MAAC Swimming & Diving Championships in February continues next weekend, when the Saints round out regular season dual meet action at Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday, January 22 at 1 PM.
