COVID-19 cases have still been increasing on average across the United States and have been affecting many college swim meets in 2022 already. The list of cancellations as of now at least adds another five Division I swimming and diving meets as well as many more Division II, Division III, and NAIA meets.
The United States as a whole right now has 243 cases per 100,000 people. Hospitals are easily overwhelmed as the number of cases increases and staff members become positive.
Wyoming and Denver
The University of Wyoming announced that its meet against the University of Denver has been canceled “due to COVID-19 related issues within the Pioneers’ swim program.” The meet was scheduled for Saturday, January 15th. The meet was also originally scheduled for Saturday, January 8th but was postponed due to COVID-19 within Wyoming’s program.
In place of the dual meet, Wyoming announced that it was still planning to host an intrasquad meet to allow for the senior class to be recognized.
Rider and Fairfield
Fairfield University has announced that “due to COVID-19 protocol compliance within the Bronc’s program” the meet scheduled for Saturday, January 15th against Rider has been canceled. Fairfield also announced that they will instead head to Philadelphia to take on La Salle and the University of Richmond.
Fairfield had their meet scheduled for January 7th against Seton Hall postponed. This is Rider’s first dual meet cancelation as they only have canceled their alumni meet prior to this weekend.
The Rider men are scheduled to swim against NJIT on Saturday, January 22nd, and the Rider women are scheduled to swim against Stony Brook University on the 22nd as well.
Northern Arizona and Dixie State
Northern Arizona University (NAU) was scheduled to swim Dixie State University on Saturday, January 15th at Dixie State. Dixie State announced that the meet had been canceled “due to COVID-19 protocols inside the Lumberjack program.”
Dixie State will instead host an intrasquad meet. NAU is next scheduled to race New Mexico State on January 22nd.
Maine and Bowdoin
Division I University of Maine and Division III Bowdoin University have had their meet scheduled for Saturday, January 15th “postponed due to COVID-19 protocols” Maine announced. Maine has also said that they will make every attempt to reschedule and make an announcement at a later time.
This is the first postponement for Maine. This also was supposed to be the third meet that Bowdoin was to compete in as they only have previously swam in a tri-meet against Division III schools MIT and WPI as well as attended the Maine State Meet.
Maine’s next meet is scheduled for Saturday, January 29th at home against Providence College. Bowdoin’s next meet is scheduled for the 29th as well against Division III Colby College.
Saint Francis (PA) and Allegheny
Division I Saint Francis University (PA) was set to compete against Division III Allegheny College on Saturday, January 15th (women only). The meet has now been canceled.
Saint Francis has their next meet scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd at home against Siena College. Allegheny also has their next meet scheduled for January 22nd, and they will travel to Ohio for the Wooster Quad Meet.
