Big Ten Champion Emily Weiss (Indiana) Announces Medical Retirement

Indiana Junior Emily Weiss announced her medical retirement from swimming Tuesday on Instagram. She has competed in meets this season for Indiana, including the most recent one on December 3rd against Cincinnati, but she did miss the first meet of the season against Kentucky and Indiana State.

Weiss has not previously touched on any health issues on social media but has said that the decision has been made “With help from the medical staff here at IU.”

Weiss won the 200 breaststroke at the 2021 Big Ten Championships in a time of 2:07.20. She also finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 59.61. She was a Two-Time All American in 2020 and 2021, a First Team All-Big Ten in 2021, and a Second Team All-Big Ten in 2020.

Outside of the college level, she made the 2018-2019 US National Team roster.  She also was a member of both the 2017 World Junior Championships roster and the 2018 Junior Pan Pacs roster for the United States. At the 2018 Junior Pan Pacs, she won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.55 and also was a part of the 4×100 medley relay and split a 1:08.52 on the breaststroke leg. Her 100 breaststroke time from the meet earned her a spot on the 2018-2019 US National Team roster.

Weiss attended Yorktown High School in Yorktown, Indiana. As a sophomore there, she broke Lilly King’s Indiana high school state record in the 100 breaststroke. A year later, she broke the national high school record in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 58.40.

She was a member of Cardinal Community Swim Club out of Muncie, Indiana. She also still holds 13 short course yards and four long course meters Indiana LSC records.

Indiana’s breaststroke group will attempt to fill the gap with freshman Brearna Crawford, seniors Noelle Peplowski and Mackenzie Looze, and sophomore Catherine Graham.

Does anyone know what the medical issue is, that made her retire? Has she had any big injuries during her career?
