Bolles 16-year old Caeleb Dressel has broken the National Age Group Record in the men’s 100 free as another one of the glory age group days of the late 80’s/early 90’s goes by the wayside.
Dressel swam a 49.63 in prelims to break the 1990 record set by Cincinnati legend Joe Hudepohl that had been 50.24. This makes Dressel the youngest swimmer in U.S. history to swim into the 40’s in this race, and he’ll still finish out the summer as a 15-16.
His previous personal best was 50.85; that’s a huge drop, but won’t surprise many in the Bolles camp. We spoke with many around that group this week who were all-but-guaranteeing this record, saying that Dressel has been training really strongly.
Though he trains with Bolles, Dressel is one of the rare part of that club program that doesn’t also swim for the High School, as he attends nearby Clay High School. He trains directly under Jason Calanog. With open contact beginning for college coaches on July 1, the senior-to-be has left a brilliant final impression for coaches trying to identify the top targets headed into the fall.
Dressel previously broke Hudepohl’s yards record at Short Course Juniors in December.
Dropped another .13 in finals. Amazing! Congratulations, Caeleb!
Caleb already has great strength at 16. High elbow recoveries always win out in the long run.
Congratulations Caleb, I have watched you come up the ranks and blow everyone away for quite a few years now (after all you took all my son’s rc records from him)…it’s no surprise you are swimming so well, Bolles has a great program and it is obviously working for you! Keep up the good work!
Watched on the webcast and the expression on Caeleb’s face in this photo was all the emotion he showed when he saw his time: none! This tells me he’s not impressed and expects more. He’s not done yet.
Add another name to the crop of young phenoms!
Ha! I totally called it. I figured he would break 50. That’s freaking insane
Congrats to him. Did anyone else think his stroke looked a little weird though? His strokes were so choppy and tough to watch compared to the other swimmers.
Tough to watch? That’s a little harsh. He had a higher elbow (i.e. not straight arm stroke) than some of the others, but that’s about all I noticed.
Maybe not tough to watch, but certainly not pretty (and it wasn’t just the higher elbow catch). It was probably a combination of his intense stroke rate and a recovery that could definitely be finessed. Room for improvement and young talent… a good combination.
Big congratulations to Caeleb, Jason and all the Bolles team. A pretty beast swim (Y)
So happy to see Caelebs success after swimming with him since he was breaking records as a 10 year old. Amazing things happen when a coach and swimmer believe in each other as much as Jason and Caeleb!
Congrats to bolles!! They are swimming fast!! That is awesome.
That’s a promising start of the trials. Well done to Dressel of course. We will be here waiting for the new achievements
